I have no clue, all I know is that the pcie lanes are the only connection your gpu has to the motherboard/cpu so the data must be transferred through them.

As far as I know hardware can only communicate with 0s and 1s which is "no current flowing" and "current flowing"

 

Obviously the input from the CPU needs to be "translated" into commands for the GPU. This is where drivers like DirectX, OpenGL or Vulkan come into play.

 

I'm really no expert on this though
