my computer is currently a

core i7-4790k

msi z97 gaming 5 motherboard

corsair cx 500 m psu

gtx 750 (soon to be 1080 ti)

 

my question is how much longer do you think this system will be viable for gaming mainly talking about the motherboard and processor.

Depends what you define as "viable". Should easily work for gaming for the next few years.

Wouldn't worry about the future, nobody can predict the future. Just buy the parts for today (or upcoming) games.

The 4790k is still a very capable chip. I think you can get similar performance to one of Intel's newer chips if you overclock it. So, I wouldn't worry about the future for now.

It'll be pretty decent, the 4790k is still a really great chip and the 1080ti is a sure bet on the pascal line up

I have a 4790k and I don't feel anywhere close to needing an upgrade. This bad boy could easily last me another 5 years if the CPU market keeps going the way it has been. And even then, I'll probably only be upgrading for newer features. Your GPU is pretty trash and that's definitely what is holding you back. I'd also recommend upgrading the PSU since it's not great.

 

As for how long a 1080Ti will last for gaming, no one can tell you, because;

1) We have no idea how future games will perform

2) We have no idea what resolution you're playing at

3) We have no idea what settings and FPS you expect to achieve

4) We don't know what games you do/will play.

s12ii/cx550m if you want cheap, bitfenix whisper, evga g2/3 or corsair rmx if you have the money.
