x10 hosting? or byethost?

So I've been using 000webhost.com to host an FTP server for my Visual Studio program, it has been working, but just recently I've been having problems with it and it seems that the free domains have been having issues that are being worked on, but I need a working FTP server without using my router for my program ASAP and for free.  Anyone know a good free site I can use so I can upload a small zip file that can be downloaded by my program?

Ping your free domain and get the IP, then connect to the IP directly with your FTP program if the issue is DNS related and not a problem with the FTP server itself.

I don't see the problem with hosting it yourself if the documents are very small and you have a limited number of connecting hosts. Building your own SFTP server could be done with a old junk computer and all you'd have to pay for is electricity. Just set up the remote access account as guest, don't allow sudo, and only allow read permissions so they can't hijack the server.

By any chance do you know of a video showing how to do that?  That method sounds interesting

There's tutorials on YouTube that will teach you how to build a FreeNAS server. FreeNAS is a Linux based server OS. It has one downside though. It loves to eat RAM. Other than that you could install it on a low end machine. Maybe even find some old used cheap server gear like a 4 core Xeon and 8GB of RAM. Slap a 1TB drive in it and it'd work as a cheap very dirty SFTP server.

Is this something you use for personal remote access of your projects or is this something meant for public access?
