I'm looking to upgrade my GTX 1050 Ti for something a little more powerful to game on my new monitor (1440p). Given the prices here in Europe a 1060 6GB from ASUS (double fan cooler, factory overclocked), a 1060 Founders Edition and a RX580 8GB from Gigabyte (double fan Aorus model) will cost me about the same. The RX580 being 30 euros cheaper, which doesn't matter that much to me really.

I'm hoping to use the card for as long as possible so durability is very important. Also, my PC is just a few centimeters away from me so being quiet is greatly appreciated.

Which one would you guys pick?

why did you get a 1050 ti in the first place? The extra 15% arent really worth it imo. I'd save up some money honestly, but if you really need one, then i would go with msi or asus. Dont get the EVGA ones, some of their cards from the 10xx dont have thermal pads on some VRAM or VRM chips applied which causes them to get too hot.

Are you literally sitting infront of your PC the same way i do, just refreshing and checking recent topics? You are faster every time though...

I think the jump from 1050ti to 1060 isnt THAT huge. How about sell your 1050ti and get a 1070?

That was fixed a while ago. I have an EVGA 1060 3gb, and before purchasing I contacted EVGA about this, they told me the 1060s weren't affected by this

Well, I got a good deal on the 1050 Ti when I built my PC and didn't expect to really do much gaming on it but I've gotten more into the whole PC gaming thing.

Anyway, I thought the upgrade would be more noticeable than that... And a 1070 costs a bit more than I'd like to spend on a card (about 400 euros, a 100 more than the 1060) and seems like a bit of an overkill for 1080p / 1440p (correct me if I'm wrong).

But basically you guys suggest just sticking with the 1050 Ti ? (or getting a 1070)

Personally, with your budget, I would hold out. I know you mention the 100 unit price difference to the 1070, but the prices will inevitably fall again and you may be able to save just a little more in the mean time. It isn't that the GTX1060 or RX580 won't perform (they will, especially at 1080p), it is more that if you intend to be budget gaming for a few years to come, you will certainly get more sustainability out of the 1070. In the end, if you want to upgrade, the 1070 is the first pitstop in the road ahead that will provide a meaningful improvement over your current card. Cheers -Krys

Hmm ok thanks!

But, given that I could sell my card for 140 now, would it be wiser to wait for a new generation of cards or sell now and get a 1070 if I do decide to upgrade?

for 1440p i wouldnt recommend anything less than a gtx 1070.

yea well depends on your graphical needs, i have a slightly oc'd gtx 970 with performs somewhat similar to the gtx 1060 with stock clocks assuming that the game doesnt need more than 4gb of vram. Its totally fine for me, i play in 1440p with the evga gtx 970 and get around 70fps avg in bf1 with settings mostly on ultra and high with only a bit of post Anti Alaising

It is almost always wise to wait. The problem is that most people who are looking for gains would like to see them sooner than later lol. As far as selling your card, if you wait until the next Nvidia generation, it will certainly lose some of its value and you will be far less likely to find an interested buyer. You also run into the conundrum where you have now waited for new GPUs, but since they are new, they have "new" prices. A new series card in the 300 dollar range could potentially provide you with less performance than a 1070, and by then you could have been enjoying the 1070 all that time. Of course, your patience could be rewarded with an excellent performer from the Vega linup for closer to your price, or you could find yourself buying a much cheaper 1070 either used or backstocked. But that is a huge gamble. As always, whether on mood, specs, wallet, or fate, (say it with me) it depends

Alright, thank you!

I guess I'll just let fate decide and see how much the 1050 sells for. If it's a fair price then I'll upgrade, if not, I'll wait.

If where you live has a new AIB RX 580 costing less than a reference GTX 1060, I don't think selling your 1050ti will be enough to get a GTX 1070...

And btw even Vega has no announced launch date yet. So if you wait, there's no telling how many months before something worthy becomes available.

I know it won't be anywhere near enough to buy me a 1070, all I'm hoping for is to minimize my loss on the 1050.

And that's exactly why I'm thinking that selling and upgrading now might just not be too bad of an idea after all. There's no way of knowing how long I'd have to wait and, as Krystic said, I could have been enjoying a 1070 in that time.
