I been waiting several months for the perfect laptop. One with a lot of power, that looks sleek and professional (not gamerish), and that does not break my bank (under $1,500).

A laptop of such qualities was finally invented! The Lenovo Yoga 720 15IKB!!! I was surprised to see no topic on this laptop on here considering it is the first 2 in 1 on the market with a quad core processor. Also the first 2 in 1 on the market with a 10 series NVIDIA graphics card. So this is a ground breaking new laptop for the market.

I purchased this lap top last week and it arrived a few days ago. I love it and have found only very a couple minor things I would change. I purchased the following configuration....

15.6 inch 3840 x 2160 IPS Display (NOT PenTile, but real RGB)

i7-7700HQ 2.8GHz

16GB DDR4 RAM at 2133MHz

512GB PCIe SSD

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 2GB GDRR5

6 cell 72 watt hour battery

Dual JBL Dolby Atmos Speakers

1 Thunderbolt 3 port

2 USB 3.0 Type-A

Build Quality is all Aluminium

All that for only $1,499! So no matter how you slice it, there is no other laptop on the market under $1,500 with specs that good, that also looks professional (not gamerish), with good all aluminum build quality. I never was a big Lenovo fan until now, I must say they hit a home run with this laptop.

So I would love to hear everyone else's opinion on this laptop? I know it can be hard to judge completely since there is no reviews of one yet *Cough Linus Cough* But I do plan on posting a review on it sometime with in the next 1 to 2 weeks. So what do you all think?

You can check it out on the US Lenovo website right here

If the gpu were bumped up to maybe a 1060 and display bumped down to standard 1080p, I could see myself interested. At 4k resolution, the 1050 is gonna struggle at higher settings in certain games.

That said, that's a pretty nice package at 1.5k for a notebook.

If I had enough budget, I will get the Yoga 720 instead of the Legion Y520...

Love it's 360 degree hinge, design, nice build quality etc.

Looking forward to your review!

Yes that is true. But I do not really game on laptop, but if I did then I would always put the resolution at 1080p in the game settings. The main reason I got this laptop was for 4K video editing. The 1050 does great with 4K video editing as we have seen in the Dell XPS 15. So with this laptop you get the best of both worlds, 4K video editing, and great 50+fps gaming (with display and game settings at 1080p).

Also now that you mention it, there is a FHD (1920x1080p) display option for the Yoga 720 which knocks down the price to only $1,259. A steal if you want a sleek looking professional laptop that can also game with any major title out today. The only down side is that it knocks the RAM down to 8GB but it is still DDR4 and I think you might be able to add an extra 8GB. Also knocks the SSD down to 256GB, but might also be upgrade-able too. But I would recommend checking with Lenovo on that first.

In fact if you go to the link in my original post Lenovo is doing a special discount on the FHD display model for $110 off, which brings it down to only $1,149. Which is a price that kind of blows my mind for this laptop. Unfortunately Lenovo does not say when that deal will end. It just started a few days ago. So I think it is safe to say the deal will last today and tomorrow for the weekend. Beyond that it is hard to say. So if anyone was thinking about a FHD model of this, now is the time to pull the trigger.

Although if you game a lot, especially with high graphic titles like Witcher 3, then it is best not to get this laptop. But for a moderate gamer, or a gamer that is okay with playing higher titles on 1080p medium settings (30fps), then still could be  GOOD gaming laptop. Except mainly this laptop is best for video editors, digital designers, coders, and artists.  I highly recommend it to anyone who is not a hardcore gamer.

Yeah, Legion Y520 is a good alternative in the same price range as the FHD display model of the Yoga 720 for better gaming performance if you don't mind the red accents. If I was getting a gaming laptop under $1,200 that is probably what I would get too.

Thanks and I am looking forward to writing the review!

I'm a Linux user and would like to know if the 720 model is good supported. It seems like the 710 have some freezing and not supported device.

I think it still too early but if someone try to install a linux on 720, I enjoy to know its opinion. thanks

The acoustics of the speakers? They are great!! I give them a 8.5 out of 10. I give minus 0.5 point because I wish they had a tad bit more bass. But that is more of a personal preference. However there is Dolby Atmos equalizer controls which help customize it the way you want. So that why I only took off half a point. Also I took off another point because the speakers are on the bottom 2 front corners of the laptop. So they are downward facing in regular laptop mode. However overall they are really great!

The thermals have been great so far but I have not tested any gaming yet. So I do not know for sure yet. But while browsing multiple tabs, or while using docs, and using other applications it stays very cool. Just slightly warm on the bottom if it is on your lap. That is where 1 of the vents are. I believe it is the intake vent which goes across the entire bottom. Then a big exhaust vent across the entire back area between the 2 hinges. So it is vented very well. Fans have been either non existent or low speed barely noticeable so far.

I will provide a more thorough review once I have tested more.

I've been thinking about this machine, and the question of PenTile is the one thing I hadn't been able to confirm. Not doubting you, but how did you verify it's not using PenTile? Thanks!

I bought one but it was defective and returned it. Saw it on sale for 1150 and bought it again. It seems pretty nice so far, it just isn't quite as high quality as the precision 5520.

Also bought and returned it due to defects in build  quality. I have a few videos on YouTube. Speakers were really bad, screen had average color and contrast. Loud fans and thermal throttling. I had the yoga 710 previously as well and was not impressed by the fit and finish.

Really?! This thing is completely all aluminium build. The lid, the inside, the bottom, all solid aluminium. What are you 2 expecting? What specifically about the build quality do you not like or think needs improved?

When you have it with an XPS side by side you'll understand. It's a bit bigger and the trackpad isn't as good. I hate the yoga logo on the lid as well. Everything else about it is perfectly nice.

XPS doesn't have 360 degree hinge, isn't it?

Okay thats understandable. Although size, logo, and trackpad aren't reasons to say that build quality is bad. I agree the track pad is not great (8 out of 10). I agree also that the click is just a tiny bit too deep. Trackpad on XPS 15 i tried in store was a bit nicer click. But I like the keyboard on the Lenovo Yoga 720 better, it has more feed back than the XPS 15.

Although the trackpad is still pretty good on the Lenovo and it's a precision track pad driver like the XPS 15 and Precision, so the gestures are really good. Plus I tap trackpads to click which is a gesture, and that works flawless since its a precision trackpad.
