My 1080ti FE + Kraken G10 + Kraken X31

It seems everyone on the internet has an opinion on how to do the Kraken G10 mod.  For $50 at my shop, I take people's GPUs and do this affordable mod to help my (local) client's computers be quieter and cooler, easy peasy  (We live in AZ, it's hot and dirty here).  This time around, I decided to make a post somewhere on the internet of me doing one of these mods on my personal GPU, my EVGA 1080ti.  The LTT forums seem forgiving enough so hopefully you guys dig it!

 

These are all the photos I took of the process I went through to get the 1080ti cooled.  The parts I used was a Kraken G10, and a Kraken X31 to make the mod. I also outfitted the radiator and bracket with Noctua fans, replacing the NZXT fans it came with.

 

I always do my personal GPUs differently than I do my clients (I over-protect/over-build their cards while I'm a little less picky about my cards.  Don't crucify me if you see something questionable.  Be nice, I'm squishy.)  Different than how I did my 1080 FE hybrid mod, my 1080ti was definetly gonna get some extra love on the VRMs and VRAM. I always get heatsinks to help cool the VRM and the GDDR5 memory chips themselves. I didn't cool the mosfets due to the questionable thermal tape-stuff on the tiny heatsinks I bought just for those. I will go back and and actually use some thermal adhesive to make them a permanent fixture to the chips on the PCB, but that comes with other problems (like selling my personal 1080i to someone who doesn't want the Kraken bracket attached.  I always buy the latest and greatest and sell it the second the next thing comes out.)

 

All in all I'm super happy with the outcome. The GPU itself runs frosty and my overclocks seem to be holding after a week-ish of testing. Not to mention the thing is whisper quiet.

I'm not perfect but we try really hard to make people happy with their tech.

Very nice, only change I would consider personally is a G12 and an X42 (G12 isn't even out yet lol)

I was actually looking into doing this using the Kraken G12 whenever it comes out. I have the 1080 Ti as well, but the Gaming X edition. The only thing holding me back from doing this is compatibility. I'm not sure if it will work, and I don't want to waste my money. Both the G10 and G12 don't officially support any 1080 Ti version, yet you got the G10 to work.

 

If you know if it would be work, I would love to know! The card gets awfully warm. It's not the cooling on the card; it's my room / where my computer is placed.

When doing this mod, sticking with reference models of the GTX 600 series and up is my preferred GPU choice to upgrade.  For every client I do it for (maybe 10 cards so far, I think) I look up the PCB on Google Image.  That alone will tell you what it's going to entail.  I will usually look up max temps of individual mosfets before going crazy and saying, "MUST COOL ALL THE CHIPZ, IT'S GOIN GET HOT".  A lot of times I think the "put heatsinks on everything on the PCB" is a bit overblown when you start to research how much heat/torture they can actually take.  Please don't take this as a "don't use ANY heatsinks for the VRMs", you should definitely lean towards being safe than sorry.  But if you're concerned about putting thermal adhesive/cement on your card (for the many justifiable reasons you can be concerned), as long as you got really good airflow in the case I don't see it being that big of an issue.

 

Watch Gamer's Nexus stuff on this, they do an incredible job in their testing.

It's really one of those things that you do if you're comfortable with.  Are you happy with the current noise / temps / overclocks?  If you are, no need for this.  If you are unhappy, then do it!  Taking stuff apart is fun!  I have found this mod to be really only applicable to those who have a reference (aka Founders) GPU.  You may get diminishing returns with this mod.

 

But if you brought that GPU (Gigabyte 1080ti Gaming X) into the shop and asked me to do it?  Looking at this PCB, I would! :D

On top of bringing more compatibility, the G12 just looks waaayy better.  I can't wait to try it!

 

As far as the X42 goes...  since aesthetics on the pump/block itself don't matter, the X31 is way more than capable of keeping the GPU itself below 50 degrees.  I don't know what the newer Asetek pumps (pumps found on the X42) will bring to the game as far as this mod is concerned though, it would be interesting to test.  The price disparity between the X31 and X42 are simply not worth it to me.  I'm sure cooling would be better, but the difference would be negligible.

My Superposition score was dramatically better because of this very mod.  Even with my Kaby Lake i5 (4.8), the 1080ti was able to carry its weight sooo much more!  I don't have any screenshots of the "before the mod", but this is the score I got with a modest OC of +150 / +100 (I know, nothing crazy, but it does my 1440p stuff just fine).

I notice this post is a few months old now, but I hope you're still active on the site!

 

I'm going to be doing this mod for the first time next week. I just ordered all the parts this morning. I also ordered a few different types of heatsinks for the VRM and GDDR5 memory. Are there any clearance issues when putting on the G10 mod? The tall blue heatsinks look to be a little tall and I'm worried about them not allowing the G10  and the AIO pump to sit correctly on the GPU itself.

 

Is there a reason you didn't use the blue ones in that picture?
