I have been getting the pieces over time.

I'd probably be looking at an i3 6100 or i5 6500, depending on how much you're willing to spend.

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Then save for a 6500. They are only about $10 usd more than the 6400.

A new i5 6500 is about $170 usd out of box, $180-$190 in box with cooler on eBay.

Wouldn't an E3-1220 v5 Quad be supported, it is a skylake, and they run around $200 on eBay.

Pretty sure Intel limited it so that ever since Skylake Xeons could only be used on C232 and C236 chipsets.

Just looked it up and it says it's supported. I know he said he did not want to OC, but there are tons of vids on doing it, pretty much making it a 6700k.

You're actually pretty much right. Too many board mods, I wouldn't try it.

Yes, and in real life 4 core processors are better for multitasking then 2 real cores and 2 virtual ones. At this point, just buy whatever you like since you aren't happy with anything anyone suggests.

so more physical cores is better for my needs?

then  I might choose the i5. The assembly will have to wait for a while longer.
