Odd-ball external HDD issue

Girlfriend has a 1tb external Samsung HDD (unsure about model, but I do know it's on USB 3.0) that can only be accessed on Windows 7 (she never got around to upgrading to 10 and now she wants me to reinstall the OS so she can watch Netflix. hurrdurr) but can't be accessed on Windows 8.1 or 10 (have yet to try on Linux since I don't have any systems running Linux that aren't console-only).

So far I've tried on 4 different systems and all of them throw an access denied error.

 

Looking for ideas as to why this is going on and solutions that aren't limited to formatting the drive (her laptop doesn't have an hdd big enough to be able to copy all of the data from the external)

Seems like something is amiss with the permissions. Have any of the settings been modified?

Not that I could find. It also dawned upon me that it could be encrypted, but it doesn't seem to be the case

Could be bitlocker or some other sort of encryption.  Check if it is turned on on her PC.

I think the easiest method would be try and format it.

 

Do you have a spare external hdd that you can borrow her to backup files? Also, how much data does she have on the drive, how full is it?

I'm probably going to get her laptop and the drive over at my place this weekend and throw all of the data onto one of the network drives and reformat. It's about 800 gigs worth of data that can't be lost (which she made pretty clear when she grabbed the knife when I suggested reformatting).

I've probably spent more time than it was worth researching probable causes at this point.

 

I'm going to recheck for encryption, though I remember her version of Win7 not having BitLocker and I haven't seen any encryption software installed. Unless her ProBook has some sort of device-id lockdown thingy, I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of the drive being retarded
