What CPU should I upgrade to, an R5 1600 or an i7 7700 non k?

1080p gaming on ultra or near ultra.

I would go with the R5 1600 as it is overclockable and the i7 7700 (assuming its like other non k cpu's in  the past) is clocked lower then a 7700k

Case - NZXT H6 Flow : Mobo - ASRock X670E PG Lightning : PSU - Deepcool PX1000G : CPU - AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D w/Arctic Freezer III 360  : Memory - G.Skill Ripjaws S5 32gb 6000mhz CL30 : GPU - MSI Expert 4080 Super : Storage - Verbatim Vi7000G 4tb NVME SSD  : Displays - Gigabyte 32" M32QC Curved 165hz & 27" M27Q Pro 165hz 1440p

what kinds of fps do you hope to reach? what games do you play? how many hz is your monitor?  most games prefer single core performance, but you don't need a lot of single core performance if you only need to play at 60 fps (in 99% of the cases atleast)

60fps 1080p.

Playing GTA 5, Playerunknown Battlegrounds and possibly battlefields 4 & 1. It would also be nice if it ran pcsx2 smoothly.

Screen is 60hz, hence the 60fps I'm trying to reach.

I usually record while playing. Internet is WAY too slow to stream.

Old wisdom, modern games have made a shift toward good use of multiple cores.

As for the OP, either cpu will work great, ryzen will for sure have an upgrade path later while the 7700 may only give you the option of getting a 7700k if Intel decides to change the socket with the next chipset

That wouldn't make any sense to go from a 7700 to a 7700k because if I'm gonna get a locked chip why spend $80+ more on a z270 compared to a b250?

Honestly about to just say screw it and get ryzen. After all, I'm sure anything will be better than my crap FX CPU I have now.

I was stating that AMD has committed to staying with AM4 for at least 4 years so if you got the R5 1600 you could just drop in a different chip later if you feel the need, and that Intel afaik has made no such commitment and could change their socket with the next chipset meaning that if you got the 7700 and wanted to upgrade later you may have to choose between a 7700k and replacing the mobo as well as cpu. Hope that is a little clearer

Yeah I read somewhere that Kaby Lake is the end of the LGA 1151 socket. Question then is do I get an x370 mobo or a b350? I don't plan on going multi GPU.

I don't see anyway Intel stays on the same Mobos, they hate doing that (even though it would make sense as they could justify charging more for their cpu's since the motherboard would not have to be replaced unless you were upgrading to ddr5 RAM). I'd go Ryzen all the way right now just because of the upgrade path, and the astounding progress they are making every week or two with their drivers (with the occasional hiccup of course). The last benchmarking I watched they were 6% behind Intel in gaming performance, so that's a pretty huge jump since release. If they can get their over clocks higher, then the gap will shrink even more.

The 370's seem to perform a little better, but since OC'ing seems to be the big difference, it's pretty much up to you as both boards pretty much cap the cpu at 4.0 for whatever reason (I know, I've seen vids where they nitro cool them and oc them to 5.7), but 4.0 seems to be what most consumers on consumer boards and chips are getting, regardless of mobo.

I'm a little worried about pcsx2 performance on ryzen.

Would Corsair vengeance 16gb 3000mhz ram be good?

@BeastMode6

It's what they send with most of their test boards. The Flare and Trident are specifically made for higher speeds w/Ryzen, but basically anything based on the Samsung die is good.

Yep, looks good. You can check out this article regarding RAM and Ryzen if you like.

Single vs dual channel ram? Or does it really even matter?
