Great PC speakers (2.0/2.1)

I'm tired to buy bad speakers that offers a significantly lower experience than my Home Theater and headphones. I bought several kits like the Creative T40, various Logitech 2.1 kits, the Razer Leviathan and more recently the Bose Companion 2, but they all dissapointed me and I ended up returning them the week after.

What can I buy to get a decent sound quality without it being too big? I definitely enjoy my HT setup but I want something smaller, that can still look good aside of a laptop without too much compromise on sound. Do I need to go DAC + monitoring speakers? (assuming I can find small ones).

Also something like an external sound card that could allow me to swich easily between headphones and speakers would be great.

Budget: I tried to limit myself to 100€ but I haven't find anything yet. So I'd like something between 100 and 200€, with an upper limit at 300€/$ if I can't find anything.
