So, going to be building my wife an AMD gaming rig and also need mild workstation use (photoshop and other small editing)

what do we think? any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Right now I have it around $925 - but if anyone has some thoughts to lower it to mid or low 800, would be greatly appreciated. If this price holds no big deal, still happy in this price range. Will only shop newegg, so keep items to their site.

Do not get the FX, save up a bit more money and get the Ryzen 1600. It is better in every way.

I've used the FX in the past and had great results, I know the Ryzen is the better buy given the specs, but not entirely necessary for this particular build. Appreciate the comment

Just remember that you are buying into a VERY dead platform with absolutly no upgrade path. AM4 will last until 2020 (according to AMD).

You could go for 4gb 480 to save some money if it's over budget

i've never seen someone say that they'd rather spend $1500 in 4 years than $700 now. The 1600 will be relevant for a long time, and believe me, happy wife, happy life.

Do not get the FX 8350, I don't care if the use isn't very intensive, it's Garbo. Get the r5 1400 if you have to. Single core matters allot more than you think it would. An I3 7100 and 6100 even the p 4560 is probably faster.

A Ryzen build makes more sense. An R5-1500X has roughly 20% more performance. Using one would bring the cost in around the $850 mark. An R5-1600 offers about 40% better performance than an FX-8350 and comes in just under $900.

If you are fixed on the FX-8350, you might consider getting a less expensive psu. The G3 are great units, but the cost could be reduced by picking something almost as excellent. G.Skill Ripjaws X memory modules are not the best fit with a Hyper 212 Evo.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
