gtx 1070 and i5 6600

meepo
Go to solution Solved by Lare111,

I have an i7 6700 and without hyper-threading it's equivalent to i5 6600. I also have a GTX 1070.

Without HT I get almost constant 100% CPU usage in Watch Dogs 2 and pretty bad FPS drops. GTA V and The Witcher 3 are also pretty CPU intensive and there is some stuttering. I haven't tried other games without HT. Enabling hyper-threading gives me very nice performance boost (+30-40%) and FPS drops and stutters are gone. I recommend you to get a 6700 or 7700 if you want to get stable 60 FPS in new games.

Even with i7 I still have some minor CPU bottlenecking if I disable VSync. Especially Watch Dogs 2, Ghost Recon: Wildlands and BF1 Multiplayer are very CPU intensive but I have a 60Hz monitor so there isn't really a problem because I usually play with VSync on or FPS limiter.

hey guys!
I currently have a GTX 970 with and core i5 6600 and 16 GB of DDR4 Ram. in some games like Battlefield 1, Witcher 3, Mafia 3, Watch Dogs 2 and even Hitman 2016 my CPU usage is around 90% and sometimes reaching fixed 100%.
So my question is if I get a GTX 1070(as i Plan to), will this CPU bottleneck the beast (It is not an outdated/weak cpu!) ? Do I need to upgrade my CPU as well? (1070 costs around 600$ here!)
in my country, most of the tech dudes! don't know shit about PC Builds and just want to drain your money!! I remember one of them actually believed a core i3 will be more than enough for gtx 1080!!! :-D. That's why I Created this topic. Hope u guys could help me out on this

Download HWMonitor to check CPU temps while gaming: http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/hwmonitor_1.31.exe

Game for 5 minutes then check the CPU temperature and report it back here.  I think your CPU might be thermal throttling.

Which country do you live?  What are the ambient temperatures in the room where you computer is right now?

Does your GPU ever drop below 99 or 100% usage?

yes. 60% to 99% depending on the game

You could upgrade to  2k monitor with the 1070 amd take the cpu bottleneck out and replace it with a gpu limitation.

Yeah definitely a CPU bottleneck then...

You'd probably want to look at upgrading to a 6700 or 7700 for your CPU then before upgrading the GPU.

Note though, you could check for viruses. Do you have any other apps usually open while gaming as well?

It makes me sick to see that gtx 1060 and rx 480 can't handle some games in 1080p. that's why I want to go for 1070

I dont think I have any viruses. CPU usage on Idle is fine (below 5%) and i tried this with a fresh windows 10 installed and i also got the latest drivers.

I had an i5 4690K @4.6Ghz and I ended upgrading it to a Ryzen 1700 because it was bottlenecking my 1070 and dropping frames in a lot of newer games. Obviously if I only cared about getting the most out of my 1070 I would have gotten a 7700K but I opted for the 1700 because its better for my use-case.

so do you think an i7 6700 (non K) will do the job? I have a Asus B150 Pro Gaming and I just cant go for a K Processor
