Yeah it shouldn't be much trouble at all. You might need to turn down some settings to run at 60fps, but minecraft really isn't a heavy game unless you mod the crap out of it.

Not entirely true, I've seen Minecraft knock the air out of a bunch of laptops. Depending on the laptops thermal solution and GPU you will maybe be able to run it at 60 fps, but I would not dare promise it.

I had a kind of sort of similar laptop to his and it ran minecraft just fine, even while recording. That's what I'm basing myself off of. Though that was back in like 1.0 so the game might have become more intense now.

I've just seen way too many cases of it playing so horribly. It is terribly optimised and unstable, some setups runs it easily and some struggle even though it has better hardware. :(

The opposite actually. It has gotten more optimized. I can run it at 75 fps on an E6700

Then it's changed a lot :D The first time I played minecraft was back in the early beta on some single core 2003 win XP laptop with like 1gb of RAM. It was actually completely playable.

Yeah, I've played from Alpha as well. Notch is however not the best developer though, so the more stuff he brought into the game the more he messed it up. It has gotten better since but I still see it performing very poorly on some setups (specifically laptops).

Yeah, the latest 1.7 Minecraft is pretty heavy even om default settings. Turn everything up and everything short of a expensive gaming laptop will have problems. Low end systems really need Optifine, but there is no Optifine for 1.7 yet. Will probably be a while as the 1.7 update was pretty substantial.

Will it run on a 3517U? Possibly, turn the video settings down, lock frame rates to 30 (maybe 60) etc.

Neither well, nor normal.

I don't think your correct in saying it's been more optimized, they've upped a lot of the graphical requirements for the game by using new lightning methods that can put some old system out of buisness and it really kills on people without a gpu solution. Proof? Used to be able to run minecraft on low with like 1gb of DDR ram (straight up DDR) and a pentium and now my dual core (Core 2 Duo) can't handle it properly, stutters and crap. When I got my HD 6450 though it smoothed out and became a joyful experience.

In short. Buy the laptop with the better GPU.
