Hey guys, I'm looking into starting a new project; a "Legacy Server Build". The main point of this server is to just host random servers for various gaming stuff (TS3, CS:GO, maybe even MC lol) and maybe a web server. I'm going to try and get it with DDR3 due to it's price and therefore need a older MoBo and CPU combo. What would you guys recomend in terms of that, or is there a DDR4 version of this project that would make more sense? The budget is around $500 (USD) but very flexible (the cheaper the better ofc lol). I don't need peripherals or monitors and it will be running CentOS as the OS. Idealy the MoBo would be Micro-ATX (for the case I plan to get) but it can be ATX and I'll just use the one I have.

Here's what (little) I have so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/ImperialSteele/saved/8FR8dC

I'd definitely suggest getting a better psu.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

8GB and up, chances are DDR4 is gonna end up cheaper, just a heads up ;)

also, scratch the SSD, and for the love of god dont run a cheap psu, you'll actually lose a not insignificant amount of money due to terrible efficiency at low % load on some cheaper 80+ bronze units.

Removed SSD, and upgraded PSU to a Corsair Gold just for better reliabiltiy at 100% uptime, which forgot to mention I don't need to worry about power costs for at least a year if not two due to living in dorms and having electricity costs built in. Any CPU suggestions?

on the cheap side, but blazing fast single core performance.

as for a full on recommendation:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dBPqgL

- before mentioned cpu

- nice enough mobo

- 1x8GB DDR4

- pick a hard drive of your choice, i really cant be arsed to talk about hard drives anymore.

- a case is a case

- pick a power supply of decent enough quality, the specific 80+ rating doesnt *really* matter, its more so about the amount of effort put into designing the power supply that decides efficiency at the low end.
