Yeah I've heard that also, but I was partly asking for my self and partly in hopes they would make a video, assuming some one saw my post but I've heard of Nord and Astrill being good, I tried the Tunnel bear free thing and my connection slowed to a crawl anywhere I connected. I went from 180mbps to 3mbps

VPNs have many factors which may limit your speeds. It depends heavily on these factors

  • How far away is the VPN server
    • What route does it take? Is the route optimized or congested?
  • What type of CPU do you have?
    • Is it fast enough to process the packets required by the VPN?
  • What type of CPU does the server have?
    • Is that fast enough to process your packets?
  • How much bandwidth does the server have?
    • Is it overloaded or only on a 100 Mbps connection?

I'm sure I'm missing some factors, but those are the main ones that I see. Generally speaking, your computer shouldn't have a problem processing the packets. If you use your router, however, you may see it slow down. For example, running DD-WRT on my E2500 (Linksys) router yields only 25 Mbps over a VPN.

Chances are the server is congested, and you have to remember encrypting your data is at the hands of how fast the CPU can process. Maybe bump down the encryption to put a lighter load on the server/computer, and experiment by means of testing your options with the service. You really think the NSA or ISP is gonna decrypt your traffic, are you that big of a target. I'm not saying to not encrypt your traffic, I'm just saying do you need that high of encryption?
