CPU without heatsink?

Go to solution Solved by Hero7750,

No, don't even do it for more than 5 seconds. It's alright to do it just to see if a system turns on but it will probably kill itself before the windows login screen pops up.

I need to test if a motherboard will boot into windows on an old hard drive I have with windows on it, before I order the heatsink. Will it be ok to run the system without a CPU heat sink just long enough to get into windows then imediatly turn it off, or is it too risky? Thanks.

I wouldn't. Maybe get like a small frying pan to use as a temporary heatsink.

it will likely overheat before you get into windows if its a mechanical drive you are booting off of.

Nope. Letting the system POST is usually fine but attempting to boot into an OS will probs do some damage. Just wait til you get a heatsink.

I wouldn't do it, even I didn't have any value for the CPU. It would probably fry before you can test anything.

This might be your case.

If you have a heatsink from a previous cpu may try and slap it on somehow even if its just zip ties. Atleast you would have something to help. I have noticed with some cpus even just going into the bios is enough to get them warmed up so I wouldn't risk even trying to post.

If the CPU did not ship with a heatsink it likely means the stock Intel or AMD wont cut it witch means it will like run hot from the get go.

even sitting an old cooler on top of the test CPU with some paste will help. does not have to be fixed down, but what you are thinking is risky. old junk coolers can be found everywhere mate. save yourself some potential heartache

Thanks guys. I ended up using this old Dell heat sink and some 1$ thermal paste. Glad to say it boots so I can now order a proper cooler and some non sketchy thermal paste. image.thumb.jpg.86e6a06cc7caee0fd316b1913ac5b376.jpg

@doomsriker Remember to vote or have someone labeled as the one who gave your the proper answer. But in my experience you can make do with very carefully folded aluminum foil and slap it on.
