Windows 10 Pro License transfer

I bought my PC back in November, along-side an OEM windows 10 pro key... (my second in 2016 since I had to go from mini-itx to full atx) and now that my board is defective, I bought a new one... Is there a way to transfer my license from a board to another? because I REALLY don't feel like buying a third windows 10 Pro key within a year.... I honestly preferred when the keys were binded to your drive, because I kept the same drive through all these upgrades...

Was your key tied to your WIndows account? If it was you can call up microsoft and they can deactivate one computer and transfer it over.

 

Or just download the trial copy and never activate it. You loose personalization options and have the watermark, but that is the only difference.

Uhm, are you definitely positively certainly 100% undoubtedly sure it's not a retail key? Because those can be transferred, unlike OEM keys which can't.

If it's a retail key, you just need to log in with the Microsoft account the key is tied to and follow the additional steps in the Activation process (Done it twice now after changing motherboards in the same system)

Windows 10 is tied to your account (if you used one) and hardware and giving a call to Microsoft should help you re-activate should it be necessary.

Windows keys have always been attached to the motherboard itself. Windows 10 is one of the few to do differently.

It's not tied yet but I read online it's not too late to do so... but what I'm afraid is that when I reinstall it, I HAVE to have the online account tied in... I really prefer a local account as it makes my network access and remote desktop connection much more simpler...

Yes, sadly, when I bought it, it was clearly written OEM (it was cheaper, by a marginal difference)

In that case you're stuck with having to buy another key. This is why you don't buy OEM keys (aside from the fact that anyone selling bulk OEM keys is shady AF)

I love my oem but i still only buy retail becouse, i know i will have it for a life time.

well both times I didn't plan on upgrading my motherboard... (well I expected the mini-itx build a bit, so I bought it on the grey market)... but even there, it's still 45$ or 175$ for an official OEM, and the retail key is 250$

Upgrading still works if you know how to do it. Just sayin' (confirmed by myself as of a couple weeks ago)
