I have just got my 1080 ti. The inno3d ichill x3 extreme.

The stock clocks are ofcourse higher than the reference with the boost being around 1721mhz.

When in game and benchmarking the card inevitably boosts higher using gpu boost 3.

In heaven it boosts to 2038mhz according to the heaven readout.

In games such as hit man it boosts to 1960mhz or so.

What causes these differences? Temps are pretty much the same in both tests.

Thanks.

Temps are pretty much the same or are the same? There's a big diffence.  Prolly overall load on the gpu.

GPU boost reacts to power limit and temperature if either hits its limit then it lowers speed to accommodate

Temp limit definitely not met.

Power limit -

GPU is at 99% usage in both cases. I'll have to look at power reading later - is that available in msi afterburner...?

just raise the power limit in afterburner to its highest setting, that's what most do

System specs:

4790k

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD

a few HDD's

GPU boost 3.0 is a strange animal to understand. Even I don't completely get it. What I do know from doing a lot of reading and talking with people over on overclockers.net, is that it adjusts the boost clock based on temps and power limit at various voltage steps/increments. Even if the chip is nowhere near the peak thermal limit, it will still start to reduce the clocks as the temps climb. That's why the cooler you can keep it, the higher the sustained clocks you will achieve.

Something else I've learned it that you can get a bit more out of the card and sustain higher clocks if you create a custom voltage/core clock offset curve using MSI afterburner or EVGA Precision X.

Jay did a video on this last year that might be helpful to you.

I know I lose about 2-3 steps when in game compared to heaven. Solely based on temps. 40c compared to 43-45c. So from 2000 to 1978hz normally. An easy overclock could fix that but it's also pointless.
