Hey eveyone,

I am going to swap my motherboard, its it will still be z170 but it is a different brand. I just need to change the motherboard drivers since it is the only swap i am makeing. I am not sure how to go about doing it, yes i know it is recommended to do a fresh install but i have a lot of stuff on the drive and i dont have the internet to download it again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You'll most likely lose your Windows license if you didn't go OEM. I've gotten around that a couple of times by calling in and saying that my motherboard died and I had to replace it, but ymmv

You don't have to do a full wipe and reinstall of your OS when you swap motherboards. It's not a bad idea, but I've skipped that step on several occasions, and my PC is yet to crash and burn harder than Ghost in the Shell as a result.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Any reason why you are using a different z170 motherboard? You can prob just install the new drivers over the old. Windows might not activate if you switch the motherboard though. Best option is to probably just use an external drive to swap files then fresh install.

Unsure what power supply to pick?

Check out my HTPC build.

It's not required to do a fresh install when you swap an MB. It is merely recommended because it causes less issues. I have been able to successfully transfer HDDS to other PCs with them working. Just be careful and be sure to check SATA connections and other connections over again to make sure.

I think my key is OEM, anyway i can check? Nvm its not oem

If it is, can i swap my mobo and boot up into windows, and use some softwear or somthing to clear my mobo drivers? Then install my new ones?

Just pay $30 at kinguin for a new key. You should be able to then go into settings and change the key.
