So I plopped together a list for an AMD Ryzen rig (PCPartPicker). Here are the specs,

  • AMD RYZEN 7 1800X 3.6GHz 8-Core Processor

  • MSI X370 XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM ATX AM4 Motherboard

  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

  • Samsung 960 PRO 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

  • EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card

  • EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

  • Corsair SP140 49.5 CFM 140mm Fan

  • Corsair Carbide Clear 600C ATX Full Tower Case

So, that's all fine and dandy, but I need a CPU cooler. I wasn't sure which one to pick because I'm not an expert at this stuff (that and I want to have the parts fit without any trouble). Prices are a bit high (mainly due to the graphics card but) prices do need to come down just a bit. If anyone could provide some recommendations, that would be great.

That, and I'm not so sure about AMD Ryzen. Should I go with Intel i7?

I would recommend getting an AIO cooler like a Corsair H100i or H80i for the following reasons:

1) They are pretty quiet.

2) They aren't expensive.

3) They're easy to install on an AM4 board.

4) They keep the temps pretty low (my H80i GT keeps my R7 1700 at around 20-30c).

I would also recommend getting the G.Skill Flare X memory for better performance (it's only a few bucks more expensive and with the AIO cooler you don't need to worry about clearance issues).

You could also look into Noctua coolers if you do not want to go with an AIO cooler.

From what I've heard the stock cooler that comes with the 1800x is pretty good, the only reason I recommended the AIO cooler is because research shows the G.Skill Flare X RAM offers a significant performance increase for the price but some coolers have clearance issues with the G.Skill RAM.

H100i or 110i is probably good.

Things though:

-Why a 1800x and not a 1700, which OCs just as well for cheaper?

-3200 MHz g skill ram for higher performance and Samsung b die for better compatibility and OCing

-Why a 960 pro? 960 evo is good enough for most plus for booting up and launch apps an nvme ssd isn't any better than a sata one:

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

get a GTX 1080 ti instead

I think he should wait for Vega. When Vega comes out he should wait for Volta. Once Volta is out he should wait for Navi, maybe then we can start considering a GPU. :P

I didn't catch what the OP was using this build for, it might be worth waiting a couple of days for the Ryzen 5 lineup (I think it's launching tomorrow). If he is only gaming, he could just grab a 6 core and save more money but still get something with headroom to grow.

For a CPU cooler you could probably get away with something like a slim be quiet or Noctua. You could look at the Cryorig H5 Universal (shifted to make room for RAM). You could also go with AIO coolers if you want.

Intel Xeon 1650 V0 (4.4GHz @1.4V), ASRock X79 Extreme6, 32GB of HyperX 1866, Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT, Silverstone Redline (black) RL05BB-W, Crucial MX500 500GB SSD, TeamGroup GX2 512GB SSD, WD AV-25 1TB 2.5" HDD with generic Chinese 120GB SSD as cache, x2 Seagate 2TB SSHD(RAID 0) with generic Chinese 240GB SSD as cache, SeaSonic Focus Plus Gold 850, x2 Acer H236HL, Acer V277U be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, Logitech K120, Tecknet "Gaming" mouse, Creative Inspire T2900, HyperX Cloud Flight Wireless headset, Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

Um, there is no stock cooler with the 1800x.  All of the x variants - with the noted exception of the upcoming 1500x - are sold WOF (without fan).

@lukestechtips Be aware that while the H100i is compatible with Ryzen, the H100i v2 is NOT compatible without an additional bracket from Corsair.  And it took me a month to get my bracket for my H115i.  Having said that, there's virtually no difference between the H100i and the v2, save for better MiniITX compatibility on the latter.  The H110i is also directly compatible without a bracket.

Oh, the info I had much be wrong. I read it would come with the Wraith HSF or whatever it was called. Reviews of the fan claimed it was good.

Luckily nobody else will have to wait a month for the AM4 bracket, we were some of the unlucky ones who ordered it before it was created.
