Hey guys, Goldglove made this video a while back about his 2 PC setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDPbA5O9THA

However the stream PC has no GPU. My question is, how is it possible to have a quality stream without a GPU. Even with x264 (cpu) encoding, i am reading online that a GPU is still required.

For example, I have an AMD 8350 and no GPU in the stream PC. I can stream as well but i max out at ~20fps. Other than the fact he is using an Intel cpu and I am using AMD, I am wondering the the main difference is here.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

The 4770K has an iGPU which means there is a gpu next to the cpu. If you look closely there's a DVI connector plugged into the streaming system.

The FX8350 has no iGPU, while most modern Intel consumer chips do.

Yes and no.

if you use x264 the GPU should have no business with the actual encoding of the video stream.

however, the streaming software might require a GPU with a specific feature set to even start up for whatever reason.

i don't know about xsplit and others but OBS won't start if you don't have a DX 11 GPU in your system.  otherwise i would just use my thinkpad as a streaming PC but that one only has a HD3000 in it and OBS does not like it.

if i remember correctly, one needs at least some intel HD 4000 iGPU to get started.

the problem with your streaming performance might be related to something else completely.

how high is the CPU load on your stream PC when you are live? is it dropping frames ? what x264 preset are you using and have you tried turning the preset down a notch?

Well, I've no idea who that is, but if I had to guess, he's playing the game on one computer and just using the GPU-less computer as a passthrough.  He's offloading all the actual streaming and encoding onto one machine and only playing the game on his other one.  This quote from samcool55 also backs that up, "If you look closely there's a DVI connector plugged into the streaming system."
