Upgrade now or wait?

Hey guys,

I have been thinking for some time now, but i don't know if I should upgrade now or wait for VEGA ?

I am considering a GTX 1070 to play ARK Survival Evolved at High Graphics and 60+ FPS. Not Low Graphics and 30 FPS.

Current Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k @ 4,4Ghz

GPU: GTX 770 4GB

RAM: 16 GB

PSU: EVGA Supernova 750 G2

Screens: 1x Asus 24" 1080p 144Hz

               1x Asus 24" 1080p 60Hz

I am not thinking about upgrading to 1440p or 4K in the near future. Should I upgrade now to an GTX 1070 or wait for VEGA ?

I also care about noise. Got 6x Corsair AF/SP quiet fans. Which GTX 1070 could you recommend me? Good performance and Noise?

Thanks in advance,

Skull :D

Depends really, I would actually wait all the way for Volta and buy a GTX 2070 that will be a GTX 1080ti for cheaper and newer but I know that you might not want to only upgrade in 2018 :P

Wait for VEGA regardless because even if all goes wrong, second hand 1080's will still drop in price and you might get one.

Both are viable IMO. If you wait, it's possible AMD could release something faster than the 1070 for the same price, forcing Nvidia to drop the price of the 1070. No confirmation on this though. However, there hasn't been any solid date mentioned for release, so you could be waiting for a couple more months.

The RX580 is supposed to already beat the 1070, VEGA is going to compete with the 1080 / 1080ti / Titan XP¹

Alternatively you could buy a second hand GTX 980ti, it's by is still a very powerful card by all means, on the same level of the 1070 for considerably cheaper.

if you are willing to wait, wait, it can't hurt at all to do so, the GPUs won't become more expensive in that time, and they might become cheaper after vega

The 980 Ti is a great card, but it draws a lot of power, which also leads to high Temperatures. Really want it as silent as possible.

i cant see a slightly overclocked 480 beating the 1070 tbh.

anyway OP wait for VEGA and the 500 series of cards from AMD before buying anything because used cards will get cheaper, and then snatch up either a used 1080, a new VEGA GPU or a new 500 series GPU

But at what price? If it's at around the $500+ mark, then it's not really competing against the 1070.

havent heard any of that, from what i know its going to be a 480 with a slight overclock and possiably a slight IPC increase aswell, so basically 10-20% faster then the RX 480 which is not going to be compeating with the 1070

Call me skeptical, but a $300 GPU coming out in the next couple months that competes with the GTX 1080 sounds a bit too good to be true IMO. I could see the 1170 matching the 1080 when Volta finally hits, and AMD matching. But undercutting Nvidia now by that much seems extremely advantageous.

I mean the RX580 competing with the 1070.

VEGA will probably be priced higher.

And taking past experience the 2070 will be more likely on the 1080ti level.

In my experience with used parts, the 980ti is not much cheaper than the 1070 which is commonly sold at the $350 price point (lower with rebates and codes depending on the site).

The rx580 is essentially an oc'd 480. Now I've seen 480's oc'd to 1500 clock, which is about what you'd need for raw performance for close to 1070 levels. People always look at tflops, but there is so much more involved. In theory, you'd need about 8 tflops from the 480/580 to be on par with a stock 1070. If I were upgrading from a 770 I'd grab a 480 8gig (or if you can afford the 1070 price tag of $350-375) 2 4 gb 480's that are already OC'd to 1.21 or so, which will offer fantastic performance, and will be very easy to resell when Vega is released. They have been saying "It's on the horizon, you will be amazed" for what, 9 months now?" I would not wait.

Either 2 4 gig rx480's for the best performance, or 1 1070. Can't go wrong either way. http://pcpartpicker.com/product/6898TW/gigabyte-radeon-rx-480-40gb-g1-gaming-video-card-gv-rx480g1-gaming-4gd These two cf well, and provide signifigant oc room, and your psu should handle it fine.

For a 1070 at the same price, this Zotac is a great choice http://pcpartpicker.com/product/8qrcCJ/zotac-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-video-card-zt-p10700i-10p

EDIT Good factory OC'd 480's (Saphire Nitro+ for instance are not worth the extra 10z jump for the additional $30 usd per card)

There is enough youth in this world, how about a fountain of smart?

A couple more things to consider. With the 1070 you won't have to worry about a game supporting a dual card setup like you would with two 480's. The 1070 should OC to 2ghz, which should match the performance of 2 stock 4 gig 480's.

The second is, do your monitors support g-sync or free sync? If they support the latter then I'd go with AMD; if not you may as well go with the g-sync tech you paid for with the monitors and stick with NVidea..

I dont have Gsync or Freesync. Never played with it. Is there a big difference with one of thoose ?

g-sync is a little better, free-sync is still a huge improvement. I can almost promise that you have free-sync (or g-sync) on the 144hz. What model is it?

There is enough youth in this world, how about a fountain of smart?

My model doesnt. Bought it 2 years ago and didn't think about Gsync or Freesync. https://amazon.de/gp/product/B00B19T7QC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There is now a newer model with Freesync for an extra 40$. And one with Gsync, but it costs an extra 150$.
