Out of curiosity, what is it that makes it superior to say PC Specialist or CyberPower builds since it's the same chassis ?

Clevo has the best potential laptop of the bunch. Out of the box it doesn't qualify for the top spot in terms of cooling and performance, due mainly to a bad heatsink design on the CPU and bad heatsink quality control. Its stock BIOS also leaves much to be designed and is designed to throttle. BUT. There exists Prema BIOS (and soon vBIOS) mods for it, which you can get by buying from a Prema Partner (or maybe due to a collaboration idea Prema had with OBSIDIAN-PC which, while not legally able to partner with him, supports him and is one of the two places one should buy a P870xMx machine from), and there's two vendors that fix Clevo's bullshit. OBSIDIAN-PC (EU) and HIDevolution (US primarily, sells worldwide with international warranty policy) both do lots of great work. Origin-PC can be ignored entirely, they're overpriced, underwhelming, and just plain a bad vendor to get Clevo from. Even if they dropped their price on that thing by $1000 flat out it wouldn't be worth it buying from them. HID and Obsidian delid your CPUs and apply liquid metal TIM underneath (for free), apply a shim to the CPU heatsink (OBSIDIAN solders, HID I think uses LM for adhesive) to improve contact, HID undervolts & overclocks your chips so 7700Ks all come 4.7GHz standard and 7600Ks come 4.3GHz standard, OBSIDIAN will lap the heatsinks for you to get best contact, both of them use thermal pad arrangements for better contact on the GPUs so cooling works best, they remove part of the dust filter so that you get the second fan having access to air properly, among other things. They're the only place it makes sense buying those things from, unless you want to do a lot of manual tweaking yourself. Since Coffee Lake is going to be on the LGA 1151 socket, and is rumored to be hexacore in mainstream, you can also slot that in (with a BIOS update, probably Prema BIOS only on P870DM3 though). Modularity and upgrade-ability and RAM support (though some heavy tweaking may be needed to get it to work) is the selling point and benefits.

I will be moving soon so need to scrap and sell my desktop tower. I was thinking of picking up a gtx 1080 gaming laptop with a FHD or QHD display and came across the Alienware 17 R4. I'm digging the specs and it's priced pretty well compared to similar offerings from MSI (GT73VR Titan Pro). However digging through some forums i saw posts saying how the CPU was going up to almost 95-100 degrees under load which is obviously not ideal. But i also encountered posts saying this was fixed in the latest revision.

Anyone got more information on this matter? I'm set on buying a gtx 1080 laptop and am torn between the alienware and msi gt73vr titan pro. If the heating issue is solved I'll get the Alienware.

It depends on what CPU you get, The unlocked ones do thermal throttle the others 6700HQ and 7700HQ don't thermal throttle. The "fix" was a BIOS update. They are still great laptops and won't throttle in any real worlds conditions

Do not trust AW with their shitty quality control unless you like putting 10+ hours of work just to make it usable. This will serve you much better, although you won't get amazing battery life. Also this has much more power due to prema mod bios and desktop cpu. http://www.hidevolution.com/evoc-clevo-p775dm3-g-custom-built-gaming-desktop-replacement-laptop.html

I would take MSI or Asus. even Aorus over AW

I've got the MSI GE62 which spec's wise is no where close to what you looking and I've had a fantastic time with gaming, even battery life isn't bad. If was was in the market I'd prob grab a MSI GE72 happily.

The GE72 has bad heat issues that were even present in the days of skylake+maxwell which were a very cool running combo, pascal and kaby on the other hand are much hotter and badly made chaises will not go very well with those architectures.

The two options that I would consider would be MSI or Clevo, and that is all up to you. IMHO clevo gives you unparalleled configuration and choice compared to anyone else, so this makes clevos the best in my mind.

My one also had bad heating issues, read about it before I got it, and honestly never had a days issue with it, Yeah it gets Hot and loud but Its kinda what I expect from a gaming laptop. even my non gaming ones got loud when doing VMware server maintenance, Guess its just not something that bothers me.

You shouldn't expect a "gaming laptop" to overheat and be loud in all honesty, it is just some manufactures trying to cash in on cheaper designs that don't really work as someone intends them to. I made mistake of buying the G751 and I regret it more everyday. Also if you want a desktop experience in a laptop then the clevo that I linked in this thread would be perfect for you, honestly though I see plenty of people's i5s getting crushed by some newer and older titles 4c/4t is just becoming too little if you want the best performance in gaming. That clevo with an overclocked 7700k and liquid metal will not overheat and it will give you the desktop experience, granted this is at a 300-500 dollar premium.

I haven't heard of Clevo (at least in the UK) before. I'll see if i can ship them to the UK without paying loads on shipping and Tax. Do they have good cooling ?

Yes, they do have good cooling and with the liquid metal on the 7700k it is able to sustain a 5ghz oc without temps reaching that high. @Pendragon what is the best clevo reseller to buy from if you're in the uk? I don't know all of the resellers that well.

I briefly tried to find Clevo resellers in the UK and only came across this one that allowed me to customize it.

https://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/Fusion_Ultra_1080_Gaming_Laptop

says the notebook itself is a Clevo P775DM3-G.

Also PCSpecialist laptops use Clevo chasis as well i believe

I'd recommend Obsidian PC. https://www.obsidian-pc.com/en/ I believe they ship to UK. These guys are hands down the best EU retailers. Otherwise, I'd honestly say a full tuned up and fixed AW17 R4 is a pretty good laptop. Emphasis on fully tuned and fixed. Heavy fucking emphasis. I dont like MSI personally cause they're branding makes me cry, and everything else is subpar.

I will be moving soon so need to scrap and sell my desktop tower. I was thinking of picking up a gtx 1080 gaming laptop

My question is why you would want one. Do you plan to move around often? 1080 laptops aren't exactly portable. https://www.obsidian-pc.com/en/obsidian-p775dm3-g-clevo/ <- is very solid. Because Clevo is committing to 1 MXM card design, it'll be upgradable to Volta when those cards come out and I believe Coffe Lake is still gonna have the same socket as Kaby Lake, so that might be upgradable as well.

If you're fully comfortable spending hours fixing it yourself. AW17R4 or you can buy the Clevo from https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/octaneIII-17/. You will actually need to research and fix these laptops yourself because stock conditions are a piece of shit. Obsidian PC will fix all of it for you which is why I recommend it.

Yes. It will be pretty much as bad as the AW at stock. Both of these machines can be fixed up to a degree where they are actually amazing but yea. The Clevo has best in class performance and upgradability. The AW has a solid build + battery life.

I just checked prices and it's actually not bad. Cheaper compared to the AW 17 R4 or the MSI GT73VR Titan Pro including the shipping. I'll probably end up buying it soon from Obsidian.

I bought a Alienware 17 R4 BUT

you have to go for the bare minimum specs. If you want a 1080 go for the 7820hk with GTX 1080 + Window Pro upgrade (if you want) + warranty upgrade (if you want)

Seems the alienware requires a fair amount of work. I've built over 10 pcs but have no experience working with laptops. I'll probably end up with obsidian custom clevo as I've heard nothing but praise for them after researching and the free cpu delidding, liquid metal and heatsink looping seems to good a deal to pass up on.

I'd get the alienware for the looks and the metal chassis thats built like a tank but am worried about the stock temps on the cpu without modification.

But do know that after modification it's pretty damn solid. Side note: AW does have the advantage in terms of battery life and metal chassis.

Depends on your priorities. If battery life is not a concern, the Clevo is sick. The 4k panel is amazing. If you get it. It's the best 17in panel currently on the market and it's amazing to look at. Please get it if your budget allows and battery life is not a concern. Do note that you'll have to make the choice between max performance and acoustics on both AW and Clevo. AW is slightly quieter with less powerful components, but if you downclock the Clevo to similar performance levels it'll still be slightly louder cause of the different fan and heatsink designs.

@D2ultima we're back to the topic of AW17 fixed up vs a P775DM3.  Also Obsidian now officially unofficially offers the Prema bios. Or Prema is offering it to Obsidian PC customers on NBR? One of those.

I'm looking into guides on how to fix the AW to see if i can do it or not. I'm definitely leaning towards the obsidian clevo though so I'll more then likely end up buying it over the AW.

Thanks a lot for advice.

Yeah, they can't offer it. Prema would give it to obsidian customers on NBR or something similar he said.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
