Hey all.  First post.

So I'm setting up my ultimate game room and considering a triple monitor or ultrawide setup.  I've been watching a lot of setup wars and got the idea for a triple monitor setup with a 4k TV mounted above.

However, as I started planning I also started looking at ultrawide monitors.  I'm looking to get a GTX 1080 so I believe I can run the triple monitor display at 5760x1080 and I could probably run a single ultrawide at 1440p.  The setup will be used for both gaming and production (I'm a civil CAD technician) who works from home on occasion.  I'll also be hooking up my ps4 and retro gaming consoles to the TV.  I play just about every type of PC game (Battlefield, Witcher 3, Civilization, Project Cars Elder Scrolls, Doom, Wolfenstein, Tomb Raider, etc.).  My budget is about $500-700.

So I came to here to ask the experts what you would do:

Option 1

Triple Monitor display using existing monitor

I currently have a 27 inch HP Pavilion 27xw IPS monitor.

  • Buy 2 more HP 27xw with vesa adapters
  • Can be overclocked to 75hz
  • Run at 5760x1080
  • Love the idea of running especially driving games at 5760x1080
  • GTX 1080 should run this setup pretty well
  • Costs about $500 for 2 monitors and 2 vesa adapters

Option 2

34" Ultrawide 1440p 60hz

  • Can only afford a 60hz ips panel.
  •  Costs about $700 -  $150 selling existing monitor = $550
  • GTX 1080 should run this setup pretty well

Option 3

Buy 3 new 24 inch 1080p 144hz TN monitors

  • Can't afford 27 inch or 1440p
  • Costs about $260 each - $780 - $150 selling existing monitor = $630
  • GTX 1080 should run this pretty well.

Any input is appreciated.  Thanks!

Option 2 sounds the best to me for gaming but you might want to get something more than a 1060 for it if you want to be able to run games at good settings. A 1070 at least but preferable a 1080.

I personally think triple monitor setups are a waste because you are spending so much money for just peripheral vision but that is an opinion.

If you want a good ultrawide gaming experience with a GTX 1060, you may have to stick with 2560x1080, rather than 3440x1440. I'd recommend a GTX 1070 for that.

Guys its probably a typo.  The triple monitor costs more and has the 1080.  I really doubt that the 1080 is changing

So does your opinion change with a 1080?  Which option would you choose?

3440X1440 IPS. Maybe check out those cheap 100Hz Korean ones like the one Linus reviewed.

You don't seem like you're more keen on competitive shooters, else I'd recommend 1080p 180Hz. Maybe you should consider getting a single 1440p G-sync panel with a high refresh rate like this one-
