Ram pairing? Important?

So, I had 32gb corsair 2600mhz ram in the form of 4x8gb, I am now down to 24 due to one of the sticks being unstable.

 

Now I'm being told that I should remove another stick and only run with pairs. 

 

My question is, what if I don't? And keep my 3x8gb setting? Whats the worst that can happen?

Nothing happens. It just won't run that slot in dual channel mode because there's only one stick.

16GB is enthusiast class anyway. 8 is the minimum for smooth gaming. 32 is like serious workstation/professional editor.
