Dell's XPS 13 and XPS 15 are highly regarded as the main competitor to whatever Apple is churning out in the MacBook Air and MacBook "Amateur" market. They can be priced similarly if you're looking for a top-spec machine, but their entry level configurations I believe start around $899-$1099.

I would say ASUS Zen

The ZenBook is actually manufactured by the exact same ODM who now manufactures a percentage of Apple's MacBook Air: Pegatron, a sister company/spinoff of ASUS. They told Pegatron to reduce production of the ZenBook or face legal action, because apparently being anti-competitive is still a legal tactic somehow...

Sidebar: Pegatron also produces a large majority of iPads and iPhones, starting with the iPhone 5C, for which they were (still are?) the sole manufacturer.

Anywho, the ZenBook is a good alternative to the MacBook Air as well, although the latest ZenBooks are going the way of Apple forcing consumers to live the dongle life or upgrade ALL of their other devices at the same time.

quality and customer service is entirely another story

Oh, absolutely. I'd much rather deal with Apple for anything service related than ... most other companies. No one seems to understand that if you bend over backwards to make your customers happy AND you offer a ... half-decent product, you'll have customers for life. Unless you force dongles upon them - I'll have to pass on those products.
