NVMe vs Optane

Hey guys,

So I've got a question that I'm not sure the community will be able to answer yet but I thought I would throw it out there anyway.

I've got a 256gb 850 pro for my boot drive and 2 x 1tb 850 evos for mass storage. I'm doing a new mini itx build and I've got 1 m.2 slot on my mobo. Now my plan was to replace the 256gb 850 pro with a 500gb 960 evo. The 850 pro is getting a little cramped and I love those NVMe speeds. However, with the announcement of Optane I'm not sure anymore. Looking at the preliminary results, it would seem that I would see greater performance gains by adding a 64gb optane drive.

So, what are your guys' thoughts? Which will give me the better performance gain, NVMe or Optane?

Thanks in advance for all the responses and I'll try my best to respond to any questions.

P.S. I have a mainly gaming workload. A lot of CS GO but also titles like Fallout 4 and Rust.

You should wait for benchmarks to say.

If you're only gonna use the ssd for OS and applications though nvme isn't worth it. It doesn't improve boot times or app launch times at all over sata SSDs. Only large file transfers and large file writes see differences.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

the Optane for desktop is not an SSD

I highly doubt it will do anything for already fast NVMe drives - wait for the benchmarks

My vote, especially since you mostly game, neither. Optane doesn't have enough capacity, NVMe isn't really needed speed wise. You likely won't notice a difference. Now, if you're getting a small drive, 250GB or lower, it's worth it because the cost difference is only $20ish.

Just so you know, intel said they were releasing Optane in the second quarter of the year, so it will be out within a month or two.

I have a question, if I happen to buy optane, should I put my OS on it? I'm confused about it because there will only be a 16gb and 32gb (I believe, correct me if wrong). I know they are planning on storing stuff you use more often on there, so can you allocate resources to it? Is it worth it to wait for it instead of just getting a different SSD?

from what ive read it mainly a chache only drive used in conjunction for HDD basically like the hybrid drives were except better latency

Even if you did, you wouldn't be able to use an optane SSD since it only works with kaby lake core i processors
