I have recently bought a Dell Dimension 4700 and am planning to get a cheap graphics card upgrade. I need something that is mid to high end, from the same time period and is $20 or so. I would also like it to use molex power. Thank you for your help

"Mid to high end" and "is $20 or so" don't quite belong in the same sentence in this time-frame.

Why not something like a used GT 730 or 740 instead? I'd imagine that the 740 in particular is on par with (or better than) higher-end cards of the day, and there's no additional power needed.

Yeah but i'm talking about something from 2005

Most of the Radeon 5800-series sell for 50-100 USD.

I loved my x1800xt...... only ati/amd card I had that ever died. I did it by over clocking it too much......... gotta watch out for those "old" cards. the 800 might only be shader model 2.0. won't do you much good.

Thanks for making me feel terrifyingly old for a second. The HD 5800 series is from 2009-2010 :P

2GB DDR3 GT 730 cards are like the herpes of Craigslist GPUs. Everybody picked them up with their Dell/Alienware/HP prebuilt "gaming" PCs, nobody was happy when they found out what they really had, and now everyone's trying to find a way to make them go away before anyone finds out. I haven't seen any GT 730s lately, but there was one week where I picked up three in the space for a few days and paid no more than $20 for each. I still have one of them in my bedroom HTPC as a 1080p adapter for an old DC 5800 SFF.

If you're after a period piece, the 6800 series is the NVIDIA way to go, X800 for AMD. Hell, if you want a GT 7600 instead, hit me up.

You see I live in Canada where everything old and low-end is over priced so that's not an option

Added to my post afterwards. A 6800 or X800 would be appropriate for a period piece, and I've got a 7600GT from 2005 that I'd part with.

FYI i'm planning to pair the GPU with a Core 2 Duo E8400

The Dimension 4700 doesn't support dual-core CPUs. Your best bet is something like a Pentium 4 630, IIRC. I just did a Dimension 5150 flip recently and ran into that same problem.

Damn it guess I have to settle with a single core

Given the realization that you're in Canada and I'm in Florida, it would cost quite a bit more to ship than it's actually worth.

OP, I build a "retro" machine last year some time. used a 5400k apu and a $40 Biostar mb and a stick of 1333 ( 4gig ). threw in a 500gb HD with 32bit XP and it plays all those old games better than they ever played back in the day. one of these days I'm going to see if my BFG Physx card will work on it.
