So my Ryzen build was a little ambitious for me...

Thought up a cheaper first build I'm locking myself in on doing real soon.

AMD FX8370 Black Edition

MSI 970A Pro Gaming Carbon RGB MoBo

XFX RX480 GTR graphics card

CoolerMaster Master Liquid Pro 280

16 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM

Kingston Savage 120 GB 2.5" SSD for my boot drive

Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200 RPM SSHD

All of that in a Fractal Design Define C case with the side window.

why do you have " ryzen" in the titel when its a FX series CPU? Still nice tough :) but i would recommend a 256 GB ssd for that 120gb boot drive. 256Gb performs much better while still being a reasonable price.

I would stay away from the AM3+ platform - it is very old. You can get better CPU's for cheaper for example the i5 2500k

NO NO NO. Don't go for an ancient AMD build like that. Either wait for Ryzen R5 or go with Intel.

I would advise against going for FX series, as you're basically going for some ancient and power-hungry technology, one that should for all intents and purposes be considered EOL status. You'll buy a motherboard with no upgrade path whatsoever, a CPU without upgrade path whatsoever, you'll be stuck on DDR3 memory and you'll be still bottlenecking in newer games.

New Ryzen 6-cores will hit the market soon, and the MSRPs are low enough. And that thing will absolutely crush your FX-8370, while AM4 platform will be supported until 2020 at least. Wait two weeks, seriously.

It doesn't make sense to buy that hardware right now, I think you are a bit confused on the "8 cores" thing. More cores isn't always better and the "quality" of the cores (how each core performs) varies a lot from one CPU model to another one.

My advice would be: Wait for the Ryzen 5 CPUs, you will get a 6-core and a 4-core option that might perform fairly good (not released yet).

Also: Don't spend that money on a watercooling AiO, the best bang for the back is getting a decent Air Cooler that cost $25-40. Unless you are aiming for higher OC (which on intel is going to cost you a bit more for the parts, and on ryzen it seems isn't easy to obtain).

Finally, your Storage configuration (while personal and different for each user and their needs) doesn't look so effective. I wouldn't go for a SSD under 240GB for a main desktop PC.

Specify your budget and location so that members here can maybe make better builds than that.

I posted another topic listing a Ryzen setup that I wanted to build for my first PC I ever built but I hit some financial snags and had to improvise. Lol. Sorry should have made that a little more clear.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I am actually contemplating on waiting for the Ryzen 5 series to launch, and while I'm at it there, I'll probably also wait and see how well the new RX580 and RX570 GPUs perform as well so I can pick one of those up as well if the price is right.

The reason I was deciding to go with a FX-8370 was because: 1. It's a cheaper CPU that I'e personally seen perform very well and didn't have any issues at all. 2. I wanted something that was a little cheaper to play around with overclocking so that I wouldn't feel AS bad if I fried it than I would with a newly released CPU. 3. I'm just trying to find the highest value possible for the lowest prices. I've been researching this for a while and have been weighing all of my options. 4. I understand that AM3+ has no upgrade path but that's not really what I was aiming for in the first place. I am aiming for a decent performing, budget friendly setup that would hold me over until I was able to afford a higher end setup and I'd either build a whole new system and case or I'd just reuse the case for this build.

Either way, I really appreciate the input from everyone. I'll be waiting for the Ryzen 5 line-up and the RX580 and 570 to be released to drop the money on a new setup. Thanks again, everyone.
