so i got an email on a gmail i have not synced with any of my microsoft accounts saying that it gave me a security code to reset my password. i was startled at first and  clicked the link to go and reset the password then i thought hold on so i opened another tab in same browser and logged in to my account to make sure that it was the security email and it was not. is this just some kind of phishing email. is it okay that i logged in on the same browser that i opened it in. anyways im running avast virus scan right now to make sure i didnt get anything then i will change my password from another computer on friday. should i be worried or am i just over reacting

Definitely a phishing mail sent from a fake mail account. Because of a weakness in the e-mail design you can make it look like a mail comes from literally anyone, like someone@Fbinyy.gov etc.

If you did not provide your login to the site that opened from the link you clicked, you might be ok.  You could still have a virus because of it.
