I live in Hungary and I'm on a 550/250 with pretty good constant speeds every day, and I'm right now trying to replace my E1000 router, since I got some dosh right now I'm wanting to replace my router, I already tried getting an Asus AC750 but accidentally it was a 10/100, which I sent back, then I got a RT-AC1200G+ which actually had random restart issue so I sent it back too and now I'm stuck with the E1000 again. So right now, I'm trying to find a good solution for myself and for my whole home. My budget is only about 180 bucks.

So I was even told by one of my friend I should steer away from  ASUS routers because they have intentional backdoors due to some ASUSgate scandal that hit them, I was kinda concerned about buying another ASUS type.

So any ideas anyone?

The general consensus on the forum from what I have seen previously is that you are best off going for a wifi-less router and an AP (Ubiquiti is a name that keeps cropping up). However, for something more friendly to your budget, I'd personally recommend the Synology RT1900ac. I've been using it for a while now (probably about half a year), and have yet to report any issues. It works really well out of the box, and if you do want to do some tweaking/monitoring, the GUI is nearly identical to Synologys DSM on their NAS line - in other words, brilliant!

Main rig: CPU: Ryzen 9800X3D | GPU: ASUS RTX 5070Ti 16GB | Mobo: Asus Z870-P | RAM: 32GB Corsair DDR5 | Storage: 2x 1TB Samsung 990 Pro (Windows 11/Pop!_OS) | Case: Fractal Design Define 7 Compact |

Laptop: 2023 MacBook Pro 14" | 12 core M2 Pro | 32 GB Unified Memory |

NAS: Synology DS216+II

The back door only exists if you use the stock firmware. Many ASUS routers are compatible with DDWRT or other 3rd party firmware's. Most people on ths fourm suggest some type of non-wireless Ubiquiti router and a Ubiquiti AP. I have seen a few suggestions for Netgear's Nighthawk Router. I have set up a TP Link Archer C7, the range and speeds seemed to be good, but its a budget router. If you you old computer hardware and like to tinker around you might build your own router and load it up with PFsense to run it. Then you only need to buy a switch and AP, which could be cheaper.

Honestly Id stay away from any thing lower then AC 1300, just because Wireless N routers can go up to N 900, so I dont see the point of one of those AC750 routers, as its basically N speed, with maybe better range.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Interesting, no I don't really think I have the time nor the energy for setting up a custom PC to run as a router, but it does seem like an interesting idea. And I doubt I can afford a Ubiquity wireless and wired at the same time, I was more tempted before to buy a MirkoTik hAP AC which seems pretty solid build.

Well, I made up my mind and went with a Synology AC1900.
