SPECS:

Gigabyte Z96X gaming 5
intel 4690K at 4.4GHZ
corsair h100i

This has happened to me before a long time ago, but I do not remember exactly what I did to solve it. I'm positive it involved updating the BIOS (Version F5), but im not sure if I cleared the CMOS first.

Basically, I turn on my computer, spam DEL and I get a black screen with a little "-" symbol and a mouse cursor. Pressing DEL should take me to the UEFI, but does that. Here is a video:

(sorry for bad quality, recorded with my phone in a rush)

Any help?

Thanks!

Using one right now

Hmm, through a port on the mobo or a USB adapter? If on the mobo, try to unplug all USB devices.

Try this....Note this may/can erase any BIOS changes you have made including overclock parameters.

  1. shut down the PC
  2. unplug the PSU
  3. take out the MOBO battery then the RAM(if you need to remove the GPU to do so then do it)
  4. place the battery upside down, meaning reverse how it was when you took it out
  5. wait 30 seconds
  6. take the MOBO battery back out and put it in the correct way then put in the RAM and the GPU if need be
  7. plug the PC back
  8. power on the PC and wait for instructions on the monitor.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

There are some motherboards that have a "Fast Boot" mode where they disable the user from entering the Bios. You might have accidentally toggled that one. Try looking into your motherboard's software packages and see if you toggled anything along those lines.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600k 4.4GHz | Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z270F Gaming | Cooler: Cryorig H7 | RAM: GSkill Ripjaws V 8GB 2x4 3200 MHz | GPU: MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X | PSU: Seasonic G-550w 80+ Gold Certified, Semi Modular | Storage: 250GB Samsung 850 EVO, 1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue | Case: NZXT S340 Elite (Black/Red) | Monitor: BenQ XL2411 144hz | Keyboard: Corsair STRAFE RGB Cherry MX Silent | Mouse: Corsair M65 Pro RGB

I'd like to make a Chemistry joke, but all the good ones ARGON. *nudgenudge *winkwink

Followed instructions exactly. When i start the computer, all i get is the screen with the "-" and mouse cursor.

Then the BIOS is probably corrupt that blinking cursor is either the BIOS is frozen or it is waiting for you to put the BIOS in the  BIOS flashback slot to load the BIOS.

I saw you put the MOBO as Gigabyte Z96X gaming 5 but i feel you meant Gigabyte Z99X gaming 5, if this is the case you have a dual BIOS MOBO so switch to the other one and see if you can recover.

Also, you are sure the RAM is in the correct order right?

THIS IS A MIRACLE!!!! A TRUE WORK OF SOME HIGHER POWER!!!!

I got frustrated and spammed the reset button. I was then prompted to load defaults and now I can type on my PC AGAIN!!!!

However, I still cannot go into the BIOS.

Thanks to all that have helped me thus far.

I would advise you try to ge tinto the BIOS and flash the BIOS to the latest version.

I was able to update the BIOS to F7 and I can get into it now. Hopefully this doesnt happen again in the future.

Thank you so much
