Yeah I know about server VMs. Basically every company ever uses one because they save a ton of money, energy, and they can utilize hardware more.

And theres heavy work on a HLSL 5.1 (DX12) > SPIR-V (Vulkan) shader recompiler officially at Kronos for their 3D portability initiative. That could be paired with a very simple translation layer to let Wine run DX12 on top of vulkan with very little overhead.

more info from PCPer, it was initially thought that LDA mode was introduced with WDDM2 and W10 and this created another confusion on W10 dependance

as it stands out, LDA mode was introduced in WDDM ever since Windows Vista !!!!

Well that's cool I guess. But hopefully new games just start using Vulkan (Star Citizen) (or DX12) just so we can get away from old APIs though.

Wish Blizzard releases like DX12 update for WoW though. That game is so heavily single threaded and uses old engine that it can cripple performance in certain situations so much that it's sad. :(
Looking forward to new games with these APIs along with great multi-GPU support.

Honestly I expect to see a lot of new games transition to Vulkan pretty quickly (next few years). Vulkan is in a lot of ways actually easier to work with than OpenGL and works with a lot of the same systems. Even if you don't build your render pipeline specifically for it, and you wind up with the same sort of performance or even a regression over OpenGL, the easier development cycle will be worth it.

 

UE4 and Unity support is also an absolutely massive boon for it. It makes Linux support relatively trivial as long as your middleware supports Linux. It makes mobile support a lot easier if your middleware supports mobile.

 

About the only thing that *might* inhibit long term support for Vulkan picking up is UWP for games, since it's tied pretty directly to DirectX.
