Hello, I am looking for a powerful laptop and I have been told the thinkpad workstations are good. Are there any other laptops I should be looking at? Has anyone got experience with thinkpads?

I was considering getting a razer blade.

My budget is £2400 ($3000)

Thanks guys :-)

Anyone here owned a thinkpad for a while and have any feedback? I am finding it hard to find that on youtube.

I have owned a couple and used a couple for work. Best keyboard ever and I currently have a T420s which I treat like shit but so far it has lasted over 6 years. You should expect about 7-8 hour battery from the P50, which is just insane for such a machine.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

Well, P51 will be available in April (not sure the exact date), with the most powerful mobile CPU ever (E3-1535 v6 3.10-4.20).

Or you can have that configuration right now if you choose Dell Precision 7520 (just available today), with one M.2 slot and one HDD slot, while P50/51 have two M.2 slot and one HDD slot, other aspect are pretty much the same.

Just now, WillTT said:

Just spoke to lenovo, they said they would give me a 10% discount on the p50. Is it worth waiting for the p51 or just grab the p50 at a cheaper price?

That's completely you own decision, $3000 dollar are more than enough for P50, or P51, or anyother 15 inch workstation from dell or lenovo. HP on the other hand, is much more expensive.

P50s is not recommended, it only features a dual-core CPU.

Or do you think the p50s will be good as it's also new?

don't get a P50s, dual core CPU and really low end GPU.

Also those 10% isn't that much at all, often you can get that if you are a student or if you look hard enough around on the market. I 100% forgot about the P51, but yeah get that if you can or just wait until it comes out, then the P50 should become a bit cheaper

what are you even getting such a powerful laptop for? These things fit a very niche segment of the market. Also I use a Zbook15 as my daily driver, specced in my sig. It's essentially HP's P50 and it's great. But again, what are you using it for, and you can get it much cheaper off the Thinkpad or Dell Outlet or off ebay refurb. It's almost never a good idea to pay full MSRP for business products unless your firm is paying for them outright. If you're looking to game these are definitely NOT the right products for you.

It's not for gaming, it's to replace my desktop. I am travelling whilst working for a few years and looking for a powerful and reliable machine, price isn't a huge concern for me. The more productive I can be the better.

Ahhh. Yes. I am that exactly type of person as well. Just wanted to make sure before you plunge thousands of dollars into it. In that case since your budget is considerable, consider the upcoming P51 with Pascal Quadro cards and the new Zbook 15 G4 which is an update over my current daily driver with Pascal.

Also, do you even need quadro??? Or just GPU-acceleration. Cause otherwise you could pick up something like the T470p and be completely fine.

I think you might be right, I probably won't need quad core and the T is a bit smaller.

I will be video editing using adobe premier occasionally, hopefully it will be powerful enough

Oh LOL you should definitely get a quad core + GPU if you're video editing. 15in or 17in? There's essentially 3 business lines. Dell, Thinkpads, HP's. They're all about the same with each having certain models that are different but alot of them are similar.

Since you won't be requiring a huge amount of power, I'd say look out for the Dell E5480 version. Wait for reviews on battery life but it's a nice little 14in quad core with a 930m for GPU acceleration. Zbook Studio was an EXTREMELY promising look that I almost wanted to get but it fell short on it's battery life. It got slammed universally that battery life was shit so I think in the upcoming revision it's going to get improved. And the P51 and Zbook 15 G4 are both larger, more expensive, more power counter parts. I don't like lenovo's "smaller" quad core offers in the T470p because it lacks TB3 and other new features that it has decided to deliberately gimp on.

tl;dr

Latitude E5480

Zbook Studio G4

Thinkpad P51

Zbook 15 G4

Thanks, I like the look of the p51. I will just have to wait until it's released.
