Hi everyone, I'm a new member to the forum. So I'm currently trying to purchase all of my stuff for my first desktop so a lot of this stuff is new knowledge to me. My biggest issue right now is deciding on which CPU to go with. But first, I'll just explain how I'll be using my desktop so that you guys have some more information to go on.

I will most certainly be using it for gaming as I currently only play games on my Macbook Pro so essentially anything is an upgrade for me. I am also planning on running VMs on it (maybe up to 8ish) as I like running Metasploitable and Kali Linux and etc. I know that for the VMs, the number of VMs I run is dependent on the amount of RAM I'm using (planning on getting 32GB). I also do some programming. I plan on also doing some small video/picture editing, but certainly nothing major. I'm planning on running 1440p for my resolution.

In terms of my build, here is what I have purchased so far.

Intel 7700K CPU

EVGA 850W Gold PSU

Intel 750 Series SSD (The add in card)

Kraken X62 CPU AIO

Phanteks Evolv ATX TG

What I still need to buy:

Motherboard

RAM (3200MHz or higher)

1080ti (Debating on founders edition or others like the FTW3)

Fans

So my main question that I am seeking help on is, should I go with the Ryzen 1800x and wait for more motherboards to come out and for the optimizations? I've been going back and forth for the CPU; I actually purchased the 1800x and then returned it for the 7700K because I couldn't make up my mind. (Yes I am crazy and also extremely indecisive.) I don't mind waiting for more motherboards/updates for the Ryzen, but I'm just not too sure of how good the CPU can be once they do make those changes and its pairing with new motherboards. I also don't mind returning my 7700K to pick up an 1800x (again...) What do you guys think of the potential for the 1800x once they do start making those optimizations? I certainly want to get the best performance that I can get out of it when gaming and etc.

Any advice/thoughts/help is greatly appreciated!

pick up a 1800x, it'll perform a tiny bit worse in games but it'll be way better while running parallel VMs (like running 2 at the same time or something like that)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I'd say 1700x/1700 as they can effectively be overclocked to run at the same frequencies for much cheaper.

COMPUTER: Mobile Battlestation  |  CPU: INTEL I7-8700k |  Motherboard: Asus z370-i Strix Gaming  | GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW ACX 3.0 | Cooler: Scythe Big Shuriken 2 Rev. b |  PSU: Corsair SF600 | HDD: Samsung 860 evo 1tb

true, but OP is asking 1800x vs 7700k

Don't VMs not require a lot of CPU processing though? I thought it was primarily RAM dependent. (I am speaking strictly in relation with the 7700K). I could be wrong but I would figure that the 7700k would still be able to handle that amount of VMs.

they require a lot of cpu power as far as i know

they also require a bunch of ram

it would crash and burn if its 100% load in multiple vms

no you don't. It all depends on what the vm's are doing, but ive done this on a 8350 and a macbook air just fine.

All I'm planning to do with my VMs is do some offensive security stuff. So like a virtual network, doing stuff to Metasploitable 2, maybe Windows machine but it'll just be sitting there and I'll just be trying to attack it. That kind of stuff. I won't be using my VMs for full workload type stuff if that is what the other guy was talking about.

that will use almost no cpu, don't worry about those vm's for your cpu choise. 7700k will be a bit faster in games, and thats what you seem to do the most, so thats what id get personally.
