I'm confused about what the OP is trying to get at since most games on the PS3/X360 were native 720p.

COD games... below 720P.

Soul Calibur II original XBOX, 1280x720 60FPS solid :D

That still doesn't mean the PS3 nor X360 could do 720p at 60FPS. Soul Calibur 4 ran on either at 60 FPS at 720p.

And only a small number of titles can run at 720p on the Xbox.

But before "significantly" faster hardware came out.

They never touted the XBOX as a HD console either yet all games displayed at 480P as opposed to the PS2\s crappy 480i for almost every game.

A bundle do full 1080i unlike the PS2's upscaled 480i to 1080i on GT4.

480p isn't HD either. And a lot of games for the Game Cube had 480p support in its early years. Nintendo dropped support because too few people actually used it.

And it probably wasn't marketed as an HD console because it was expected that few developers were going to push for that and there wasn't really a large enough of a market to justify trying to support it.

Ultimately I take issue with the second part of the topic's title. It's a strawman argument.

Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 ran at 1080i via component.
