I have been looking to upgrade my CPU for a while now, and the new Ryzen line is looking interesting. I have, however, noticed the FX-8350, which is better than my CPU and still fits in my AM3+ motherboard. I am asking what the difference is between the fx-8350 and the Ryzen 7 1700, and which one is recommended to use (I hope to use it for gaming, 144hz if that matters). Thanks

Don't upgrade to the FX 8350 it's a 5 year old cpu and nobody should buy it, go for ryzen as it's great atm but it has some early adopter issues.

Out of curiosity what CPU do you use?

You would think Ubisoft would support the Bulldozer based architectures more given their digging themed names like bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller and Excavator.

FX-8250 is ok - but compared to recent offerings from Intel and Ryzen including the incoming 3 and 5 serious, I cant recommend it. I guess it depends on how much you wanna pay, what you use your PC for

What are the specs of your current pc and what do you do with it?

If you do heavily multithreaded stuff and have a small budget the fx is still a viable option, but Ryzen's 50% higher IPC really makes a difference. If you're purely gaming, though, I recommend neither.

That's what I expected. As for my current CPU, its an old amd quad core that I bought years ago. I'm on vacation so I can't really check.

Currently using:

Old amd quad core (can't remember the name)

8gb of ddr3 ram

Gtx 1070 (one of the reasons I need a new processor)

I use it for gaming, and that's about it

For gaming, what do you recommend?

If you only game, I recommend an Intel CPU.

Do you have a specific budget?

If you want to reuse your ram, you could get a 4790k, though you might want 16 gb. If you want to move to ddr4 you could get a 7600k or 7700k, or if you aren't in a hurry you could see how Ryzen 5 performs and grab one of those or wait for it to maybe cause Intel to drop prices and then pick up an Intel CPU.

After some more research today, im thinking about the 7600k/7700k. I've read great things about them, and the new ram wont hurt. I may still wait for Ryzen 5, but seeing as it is marketed against the i5, i might pull the trigger on Intel.

How much of an upgrade it is to get the 8350 depends on what you have now. The advantage is that you don't need to buy anything else (depending on your motherboard, but most likely). But you may already have a CPU that is close to it. In any case, please get it cheap, it should be easy to get used, and in any case AMD is about to release $200 and probably $170 CPUs that outperform it.

Now, if you are willing to upgrade motherboard, RAM, etc, the 1700 is substantially better than the 8350 for games, and infinitely better for almost anything else. Of course, if you are going to buy new mobo and ram anyway, you are not restricted to Ryzen 7, so consider waiting for Ryzen 5s or going for Intel's gaming CPUs below the 1700 price tag.

Yeah, for a pure gaming build Intel is definitely still the way to go. It's marketed against the i5 because it's priced against the i5. If you want the performance now at most Intel might lower prices $70 or so but that's still greatly up for debate. Up to you whether you want to wait or not but either way I don't think it's a bad decision especially considering the CPU you have right now :D
