The current processor I have is a AMD FX-6300 6 Cores 3.5 GHz

My choice would be an AMD FX-8350 or above. No Ryzen because not going to change motherboards.

Should I really change processors, or is it not worth it?

Is it true that AMD's FX-9s are really hot, and will a water cooler help it.

System Specs:

Processor: AMD FX-6300 6 Cores 3.5 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
Memory: 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB sticks)
Graphics Card: HIS R9 380 IceQ X² OC 2GB
Storage: Toshiba 2TB
Power Supply: CX600 80 PLUS Bronze 600W
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

isn't worth the cost of the upgrade. either move to a new platform or don't upgrade the cpu.

If you're willing to do a heavy overclock (near 5GHz) on an 8320, you can get it to perform favorably compared to an i5. You'd have to upgrade your cooler and power supply to do that along with high power costs, though, which cancels out the money savings on keeping your motherboard. Even in the best-case scenario for AM3+, your best option is probably to switch platforms.

getting near 5ghz on a 8320 is very optimistic.

"best-case scenario". Optimistic, but not unheard-of. 4.7GHz at 1.5V seems to be the norm for the 8320E, 4.8 probably being the highest realistic 24/7 OC with conventional cooling.

yeah but that's what I'm saying. you are banking on luck which doesn't seem like a good idea when alot of money is being put into the upgrade.

No kidding. I don't recommend it. I'm saying that it's theoretically an option, but not a good one. That even getting extremely lucky on an AM3+ upgrade wouldn't be as good as changing platforms.
