Ryzen 5 or I7 4790?

Hello everyone,

Currently, I have an 4th gen i3 and a GTX 1060 so the CPU needs to be upgraded.

The price for the cheapest Ryzen 5 + Motherboard + DDR4 RAM is somewhat the same as an I7-4790

So, budged-wise, should I go for the I7 or Ryzen system?

Wait till Ryzen 5 Release date and then compare the benchmarks, Game fps and other things with I7 and then make your decision its only few days away. Ryzen 5 Releases on April 11. We can't estimate its performance so waiting for it is recommended.

It's just a cut down R7 so gaming will be very similar. Budget wise, I'd go for the R5 6-core.

You can see this review here with the R7 running with disabled cores ...

i3-4170, H81 board, 8GB DDR3, Crucial M4, GTX 770, Xigmatek Vangaurd Case, Creative Titanium X-fi, Razer Carcharias, 500w PSU, 24" VA panel and a 42" IPS. Thinking about getting a plant.

Just wait for benchmarks. Unfortunately, we aren't magical wizards who can predict Passmark scores (Which would be fairly useless anyway XD)

BOINC Setup:
i5 7200U @ Stock

Core2Duo T6600 @ Stock

i3 2330M @ Stock

i5 3210M @ Stock

Something also to keep in mind: compared to the 4790k the Ryzen 5 will be much more efficient due to technology that is 3 years newer alone. I would definitely compare the benchmarks but unless you are getting a used 4790k the Ryzen 5 line will be more cost efficient as well. What you intend to play will also make a huge difference as well. Many games still prefer a high clock speed and IPC to more cores. Unfortunately for the Ryzen lineup the CPU scaling just hasn't seemed to be there for a lot of games.
