Basically the 6850K has more PCIe lanes than the 6800K. that's it.

Actually it's not self explanatory... what's your budget?  What are you using them for?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I think it's a theoretical question.

Well the use case (and budget to a certain extent) still applies.

If you have to go with Intel, i7-5820k.  All the way.  It can overclock just as well as any of the others and get about the same performance.  Plus, it's the cheapest option here.

If you don't need to go with Intel, get the Ryzen 1700.  Only $330 and performs better than a $1000 i7-6900k when overclocked.

Sorry for the mess!  My laptop just went ROG!

We kind of need to know how much money matters and how much PCIe lanes matter to answer this.  Unless you only care about raw compute performance in which case I suppose we'd also need to know your expectations (if any) on overclocking, since no amount is ever guaranteed

looking for the best value on x99 and pcie lanes don't matter.

planning on very heavy overclocking but I don't know what to expect from these chips

probably not going with Ryzen probably seems weird but it kind of depends on the motherboard options

Oh wow thought the 1700 was locked hence the reason for a 1700x.

Ryzen is the best price / performance of the bunch in multithreaded applications by far.

if you aren't going for Ryzen, the 5820K is the way to go if you like overclocking,

Well In the 6+ core CPU space, RyZen does get you the best value for total multi-threaded compute at the moment imo, but it's certainly not without its issues for now.

The 6850k is the most powerful out of the box, but I'm going ot have to defer to someone who's got OC experience with all these to say how much you can typically crank them up.

Nope, they're all unlocked as long as you have the right board.  The 1700 is just clocked lower at stock so (in theory) won't OC as well as the more expensive ones, (but I don't have any sources to verify this).

From what I've gathered every Ryzen chip OCs similar. 3.9-4Ghz. 4.1 if you're super lucky

Perhaps the best examples of each can all hit the same speed but surely there must be differences in what the average chip will get to, yes?  Otherwise why would anyone pay more for something above a 1700?

Idk, XFR and a better stock cooler is what I know of. It does seem weird but even Steve from Gamers Nexus doesn't understand why the 1800x exist.

Well if that's true and you can just overclock any 1700 to as good as a 1800X that's pretty cool I guess, but it's just hard to believe

yeah I think they should of just had a 1800x and a 1800 that would be the 1700x and 1700 at the same price because ppl at the high end are likely going to oc anyway then they would have even more price argument
