Hello all.

I want to build my first pc this summer, and i need it to be able to be able to take me through the rest of college. I am a computer engineering major, so I need it to be able to handle heavy coding and hardware design as well as moderate gaming.

I plan on basing it on AMD components (for keeping cost down).

Ryzen 7 1700x

RX 470 4gb

ASUS b350 mobo

16 or 32 gb of quality ram

500gb ssd (for os and programs)

2tb hdd (1tb hdd's in raid 0)

So the only real question I have is what psu I should use, and if you guys have any recommendations please put them out there because this is my first build and I need a little guidence.

Budget: as cheap as possible without sacrificing performance

I would get the Ryzen 1700 and just overclock it as all of the cpus are basically identical just different stock speeds. and i would use the extra cash from that you save to get the 480. Ram is would recomend the Corsair vengeance lpx

Yeah.  Ryzen 1700 is a better deal.  Crucial Ballistix and G.Skill Ripjaws are also good ram sticks.

Im using the Corsair RM750i, its got good reviews, 80+ gold, quiet and has not gave me a single problem.

If you want a fully modular power supply, the Corsair RM series is probably where you want to look.  If you want to save money and would be okay with a semi-modular PSU, go for the Corsair CX series instead. :)  I personally have a Corsair CX750M and it's awesome!  :D

I would go for the R7 1700 instead of the 1700x, and overclock it to 3.7 GHz (you can easily do that without changing the voltage) and then spend the money on an aio liquid cooler (NZXT Kraken x52/62 is my personal favorite, looks awesome and is just cool in general (pun intended))

I would put 16gb of RAM in there now, as literally nothing uses more RAM than that right now.  If you need more RAM down the road, you can put another 16gb in there for 32 gb of RAM total.  As odd as it may sound, doing it this way will save you some money, as DDR4 RAM will probably be cheaper in, say, 2020, than it is right now.

For your SSD, I would go for either Samsung or Crucial.  These two are the best brands out there.

This is what you said that you will get:

Another perk of the Ryzen 1700 is that it comes with a CPU cooler, while the 1700X doesn't.  If this doesn't matter to you because you're buying an AiO cooler or a Noctua monster, I would still get the 1700 due to its cheaper price and nearly identical overclockability.

This is the PSU guide:

I have It saved in a bookmark, It is pretty handy. Theres a few things that you have to tell us when you ask for advise in a build:

1) Budget

2) What are you going to do with the build?

2.1) Games: What resolution are you going to play? Refresh rate ("fps" you want to achieve)? Which games'

2.2) No games: are you video editing/rendering? Are you just going to browse in the internet + movies etc? Just school/college   stuff?

3) Preferences (Ex: "I want It water cooled" "Im a fanboy and I want as much asus components as we can get" "I want a glass tempered case" ....)

4) I dont know (?) Think about more requirements that you would like us to consider.

I went ahead and made a complete build parts list for you

It has:

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (that you MUST overclock, even if it's only to 3.7 GHz, like I'm planning to do for my own build, as I said earlier, you can do this without changing the voltage, so you won't notice that much more sound from the fans)

Radeon RX 470, since that's what you said you wanted (if I were you, I'd wait for VEGA and the Rx 560, 570 and 580)

a X370 MoBo, for better overclocking

aio cooler (you should probably change this one, if you're just looking for performance, then I can recommend corsair's h100i v2 or h110i/115i, or just a random 240mm/280mm aio from any trusted brand

2x8GB DDR4 - 3000MHz low profile RAM, just throw in another one if you need 32GB, EZ upgrade

500GB SSD

2TB HDD

a 750W, fully modular, reliable PSU

only thing that is missing is a case, since this is ALMOST only preferance. Just get an ATX mid tower, that has room for 2 GPUs so you have the option to upgrade  in the future (even though I'd recommend upgrading to Nvidia unless the 560, 70 and 80 is AWESOME
