Asus 5450 LP Mounting bracket

A friend of mine have a Asus 5450 LP card in his HP micro server for his HTPC. now the LP bracket is missing si he just used the card without the mounting bracket.. all works fine for about 10min or so. the the machine switched off..

 

 

He had a hunch that the missing mounting bracket might be the problem. so we found him a bracket and pooof the machine is running 100%.. 

 

Can someone explain to what purpose the mounting bracket might have other than just holding the card in place securely? Or just explain why the machine would not work without the mounting bracket?
