Hi

I'm planing on rebuilding my old computer into a NAS, i have an i5 2500 and an i3 3245, and 4gb of RAM, and a compatiable motherbord.

I have ordered 3 x Seagate Ironwolf 8TB for a total of 24TB, and I want to use one of them as a parity drive.

What CPU should I use? and is FreeNAS or unRAID better for my setup?

Thanks Madz.

use the cpu you have. you can get something more appropriate but the cost in power consumption needs to trump the replacement of what you have.

One question does your NAS need to have 24/7 uptime? and does it have hotswap that allows you to replace a drive without power off?

if no then you have nothing to gain from a redundant/parity drive. you are better off using that as part of a proper backup solution

I would go with the i5 because you have so much storage space. Also I would use unRAID, because you can have 1 parity drive for any amount of storage, and it's just better! I use unRAID on my Dell Poweredge 2950.

knightslugger, Won't the 4gb of RAM be a problem? I've read that u need 1gb RAM for 1tb storage.

It's a good idea, but it's not a death sentence. I'm not certain why the 1 for 1 is desirable, or under what conditions (heavy multi-user use, large file swapping, potato). RAM is fairly inexpensive and i just loaded mine up with as much as i could stuff in there (with what i had on hand).

What about ease of use, and is it possible to change and/or migrate a disk array?

You can do that on pretty much any platform...

System/Server Administrator - Networking - Storage - Virtualization - Scripting - Applications
