Ill get straight to the point. I want to build a machine to play classic games on like mario 64, zelda and maybe something like gta san andreas. I have a 11 year old laptop with a pentium 4 @ 3GHz 512mb ram and intergrated graphics with a 128mb memory buffer. Should I give a new breath of life to that laptop and install something like xp on it, or should I go for a Raspberry device since those are trending?? Will the Raspberry be more powerful than that laptop? Also, consinder that I will need a tiny monitor for the Pi but not for the laptop. Power consumsion is not an issue. Well, what should I do??

depends on what you want to emulate. If you want ps2 and newer, idk how well a raspberry pi would emulate it.

Windows 10 Edu | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | Ryzen 9 3950x | 4x 16GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB| ROG Strix GeForce® RTX 2080 SUPER™ Advanced edition | Samsung 980 PRO 500GB + Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB + 8TB Seagate Barracuda | EVGA Supernova 650 G2 | Alienware AW3418DW + LG 34uc87c + Dell u3419w | Asus Zephyrus G14

i have an rpi 3 that has trouble running some nin. 64 games without being overclocked so nin 64 is basically the max though you can play ps1 games pretty smoothly. Another advantage of the raspberry pi is that if you wanted to invite someone over to play some games with you, you can hook it up to a tv or whatever.

The only reason I'm here is that I have homework that I don't want to do

It took me half an hour to find where to change my signature :(
