Hello,

I've been looking for a laptop recently. I need it for work/uni (Office, Programming, light CAD work), but still need the portability.

I have a few points on which I'm unsure of what to do. First of all, I get recommended to buy a 15" model instead of 13". Should I go for a 15"?

Also, I do not really know what computers to look at. I've seen the Dell XPS (way too expensive), the HP Spectre x360 (Reviews are only 4/5), and the Asus Zenbook 501VW .

I'm also hesitating on storage. Should I go for 256GB or 512GB? I know that I will be thankful for the extra space, but at the same time I plan on having a large hard drive next to it (It would stay in my dorm all the time).

Anyhow, do any of you have any suggestions on what I should do?

Cheers,

Sneling

15" screen would be better so you don't have to put your face on the screen to read things.

as for storage, 512gb is plenty and should fit your programs and be snappy (providing it is an m.2 sata, 2.5inch or pci-e ssd)

"Sulit" (adj.) something that is worth it

i7 8700K 4.8Ghz delidded / Corsair H100i V2 / Asus Strix Z370-F / G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB 3200 / EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 / ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q

Samsung 850 EVO 500GB & 250GB - Crucial MX300 M.2 525GB / Fractal Design Define S / Corsair K70 MX Reds / Logitech G502 / Beyerdynamic DT770 250Ohm

SMSL SD793II AMP/DAC - Schiit Magni 3 / PCPP

Old Rig

i5 2500k 4.5Ghz | Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P | Zotac GTX 980 AMP! Extreme | Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB 1866MHz

Okay. They're all PCIE or NVME ssd. What is the difference between them?

Personaly I would go for the 15" screen, because of CAD work. More details could help there.

Do the office/programing/CAD files take up lots of space? Get 512 gb. Are those saved files you need to carry small? 256 gb will be fine.

Yeah, I think it should get the 512 as I'll have a number of files with me.

Looking at the laptops, do you guys have any recommendations or which of the ones i recommended?

Thanks

Uni life can be very hard on a laptop, the same with work (depending on the type of work), so I would recommend getting a business class laptop, more specific a workstation from Lenovo or Dell, so a P50 or Precision 5k/7k series. They are built worlds better than what you are looking at.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

If by cad work you mean undergraduate level projects in 2D or 3D Modeling with small parts and low complexity, then the DELL XPS 13 may be fine even if you don't have a dedicated GPU with it.

The DELL XPS 15 might be a better bet though. Definitely avoid workstations, no university student needs that and I assume your work is not CAD related otherwise they'd provide you with a powerful machine that you could never afford as a student lol.

Okay. I think that the XPs is a bit too pricey for me though, looking at the things it has inside compared to price. The 15" model with ssd starts at the same price as the HP Spectre with more storage and RAM. However, I do acknowledge that it has more cores, but I am not sure if most of the programs I use will benefit from it.

I cannot affoard a workstation, and it is way too heavy to transport a lot. As I said, I will be moving around quite a bit and don't need too much power (my CAD work is limited, and I am pretty sure we can use some special computers for heavier work if needed). Thanks though!

m8 they aren't heavy at all, I actually think the P50 is a bit lighter than that Asus and you should be able to get a entry level workstation with a i7 within your budget, maybe check dell and lenovo outlet. Plus people ar getting close to 8 hours og battery life with a P50.

I did not really recommend them because of CAD, I recommended them because I know shit happens on a uni and those laptops would be able to take a beating.
