If it is prebuilt you can just google the model and find it fairly easily there, if it is "friend built" I can't imagine a motherboard maker not printing their logo somewhere on the board. If you dont want to open it up you can surely find software to look at it for you also.

How do I find chipset drivers for a motherboard. Helping a friend install windows on an old machine but they have I driver disks. Windows loaded fine but missing LAN driver. It's an integrated one.

How do I find drivers for this?

Go into device manager (right-click My Computer > Manage) and you should see the driver you're trying to install with a '?' next to it.

  1. Right-click on the driver > properties

  2. Navigate to Details tab, locate the drop down menu and select 'Hardware IDs'

  3. Locate your Vendor ID (VEN_) and Device ID (DEV_), you will need these for the coming steps, so either write them down or leave the window open or something

  4. Go to the following website: www.pcidatabse.com

  5. On that page you will see two searches for Vendor ID and Device ID - I would suggest searching for Vendor ID first (only one ID at a time, can't do both ven and dev)

  6. Once the results come back, you can now Ctrl+F to search the (sometimes) massive list of drivers for your DEV_ numbers ONLY

  7. That should give you a description of the driver needed to then Google it, or even give you a direct download link for it

Hope this helps!

ok guys. used Speccy to find the specific motherboard. Found the LAN driver and got the PC online. Now, there are still couple of yellow icons inside Device manager. Is there a chipset pack that I need to install or something. USB ports work but I see something that says USB controller etc... cannot remember but they look like chipset warnings. I cannot see anything that is specific to the motherboard. Here is the driver download area: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Download&os=Win764&Model=H61M/U3S3

Anyone have any ideas which one I need to install?

Ok let me remote access tomorrow to get this done. By the way, why is that installation file not on the manufacture's site?

One more thing, is there a way around having an OEM key and a legit Win 7 Disc downloaded from Digital River. Just noticed OEM key does not work with that disc. On hold with Microsoft for over 45 min and no one is picking up the phone.

OEM keys aren't disc restricted. More likely you have downloaded wrong version or file has corrupted. If key itself is giving error it might be restricted to one mobo and so you are stuck with MS phone support.

As said, all install DVDs .iso files are for same disc. Only keycode is defined as OEM/retail. So basicly any right version of .iso that hasn't been cracked (I have burned hours trying to find legit version in torrent) will do.

That is odd. Unless in this case, the OEM key code is a non-legit one.

For your info, Digital River still hosts ALL Windows 7 ISO's and they are legit. But I believe all the ISO's they host are retail versions. So after installation, Win 7 would not even let me enter the first Key code from the OEM product key. For sure I have downloaded the same version as before I formatted the disc. I triple checked the version and even took a snap shot of the screen in Windows where it shows me the version and OEM key code.

hold on..are you trying to enter the product id as it shows in this pic?

if so, you're doing it wrong. You need the key from the sticker on your computer.

solomongrundy, during install, the legit Win 7 disc installed it's own key. This was a an ISO I downloaded from Digital River (legit Microsoft distributor). When I try to change product key, it would not even let me enter the OEM key from the version of Windows that was installed on the machine. So it looks like OEM keys cannot be used to install retail Windows. Or this might be case specific as I have installed retail versions of Windows using an OEM key from Dell. So this leads me to believe either some OEM keys are registered with Microsoft or the OEM key used in the machine prior to reformatting is not a valid one.

Are you saying the Product ID is not the same as the install Key? Maybe that is the problem.

Either that or the previous OEM key is not legit. I think it's time to get my friend to buy a retail version of Windows. Any other ideas before we do this?

By the way, the ISO installed right now is Win 7 Ultimate (not activated). I see the cheapest way to buy a key is to get a Win 7 home disc from a retail store. Can I buy a Win 7 Home and use that key to activate Win 7 Ultimate that is already installed? Will it just change to Win 7 Home. Or do I have to help them re-install using the Win 7 Home disc again?
