Do HDD run hotter than SSDs? Worth it to use an external to increase airflow?

I'm building a Mini ITX computer in a pretty small case, mostly as a media computer but also for LAN party use (no demanding games).  It has room for for one 2.5 and one 3.5 drive.  I was thinking of doing a 250GB SSD for OS and maybe a few games, then a 1TB HDD for storage.  But because of the limited space in the case, I was wondering if it could be worth it to use an external drive for the storage?  Would this make a worthwhile impact on airflow and overall temperature in the case, at the cost of read/write speed?  The external would mostly hold video files and programs, while the SSD would hold the OS and the few games I would be putting on the machine.

No. Keeping the HDD inside should be fine. You should not see any problems with read/writes.

Depending on the enclosure.. it can be worse.

But I live in Straya may just be the heat here..higher ambient.

 

My ext has grilled holes for vents.

Still got into the high 45-49*c mark when doing 2 hour transfers (multiple copies/threads) over USB3.0 with a WDgreen. Starting out at normal 28-32*c.

 

Isolated incidence probably.

Just sharing.

I think inside your pc or external with good ambients will be fine..

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I think pumping outside air into the PC would yield extreme overclocking result too! Joke aside it's perfectly fine to have all you drives inside airflow isn't that easy to obstruct (Luke made a video where he fills a PC with random stuff and the temps are still perfectly fine)
