Rant away. Do you love it or hate it? I myself like it, on desktop I've not noticed much of a difference, it's still usable and is just fine. On a tablet laptop convertible, (I'm using the Dell XPS 12) 8.1 is AWESOME. I think the tablet convertible really works well. Of course, I'd make a couple of changes, but who wouldn't.

Through my school I got 8.1 for free before its release a while ago and I like it. The only issues I had at first was that I didn't do a clean instal so all of the files I had pre-installed before the upgrade could not be found in search which is annoying since that's how I usually run programs (win key, type in name, enter). But other than the relatively small learning curve (ok right click the start button for old start menu, make it so it boots to desktop instead of metro) it works fine takes like 5 seconds to boot too which is nice. All my games work all of my programs work, I like it.

I use classic shell and I think that win8 is better than win7 for many reasons. I love the taskmanager. I love the quickness in changing the wifi connection. I like the camera app, this lets me check my webcam. I think the task windows look nicer and more elegant.

If you can get win7 free then take it, but if you can choose win8 take that

I got startIsback and now I love it! StartisBack gives you the start menu back  http://www.startisback.com/#download-tab

Thanks. I was using classic shell, but there were some problems with it. Like explorer crashing every time I tried to search from the start menu. This is way better. Is it completely free though?

Currently using Win7 on my desktop.

Set up a new laptop on my sis a couple days ago, and to be honest after fiddling with it for 30 minutes i got hold of all the important functions [Access to control panel, shortcuts yadayada] and 8.1 Update fixed several of the major gripes i had with Win8.

I have since changed my stance to a +1 on 8.1, and i might change my OS on my desktop in order the reap the considerably lower startup time as well as performance benefits to hardware. Come discounts on Black Friday!

I really like it.
And I don't really get the problems people have with modern UI it works fine for me.
And the missing start button isn't really a problem you can do a right click on the new start button and everything you need shows up.
Also it's way faster in everything then Windows 7.

And it has DX11.1/DX11.2 wich will boost game peformance in Battlefield 4 and other upcoming games.

^The best thing 8.1 fixed that made Win8 completely usable again

I have stayed on Linux sens 1997. But I have kept Windows for dual boot to play Windows game that do not work so well in Wine. But now with Steam I can finally see a future with no Windows!

Windows 8 itself I now after have tried it for awhile have found to be as Windows 7 or even better. The metro is not that bad actually.

I'm still running on my core i7-920
