Almost any advice is welcome (don't tell me to not do it)

I am in a little bit, after a file transfer of approx 25GB (of the files I have found just now, might need to transfer others there as well) (from my laptop to my NAS) which is going reasonably fast due to my new networking solution, I am planning to upgrade my CPU in my laptop, I have checked to make sure it's socketed, etc. and I am fairly certain I know how to do it, it's very similar to a desktop I believe apart from it's in a  laptop, so apart from the advice don't, cause nah, I wanna, as this laptop needs to last me at least another 3-4 years, and with a 13 3120M, it wouldn't as it just wasn't fast enough, I am upgrading it to a i7 3612QM, which is a quad core, with the same TDP, what advice can you offer me, I have everything I need, a trust/dodgy screw driver, Arctic MX-4  Thermal compound (I can upgrade this later to a better one, if there is one, I don't know what the rankings are for thermal compound, if needed), an i7 3612QM, a laptop and a photo for photos, anything else I need?

 

Also, I will be making a record of how I do it and I'll post it later, maybe, but yea, any advice would be lovely, and no I don't have a i7 sticker to add to the laptops collection (it currently has a Pentium 4 HT sticker, two different xeon ones, an i3, an i5 a green IT and an Ardunio sticker)

You could try to find a service manual for your laptop, or a similar model. Or maybe find a user-made guide on iFixit.

It's always good to take pictures of everything when you take it apart, and label all the screws. It's also very useful to have some plastic prying tools on hand.

 

Oh, you can buy i7 badges on eBay.

nope, but I have opened it up and found the CPU socket, it's in a very accessible place

yea I might do that. and I have a plan for ordering screws, which I'm make up as I go along

and I'll be taking a lot of photos and I don't think I will need a prying tool, as it opens up easily without them

You just remove the heatsink (remember to unplug the fan!!) and swap the cpu. (make sure you took out the battery and unplugged the charger before removing cpu) Reapply thermal paste, put heatsink back on, see if it works, put laptop fully back together. Do bios update IF required (bios not fully detecting the new cpu), otherwise you are done.

yea I felt like ti'll be that easy, same time it's one of those things of I use this laptop daily and I can't having it die on me, so I just wanted to check

As it's the same generation of cpus, it should be fine without a bios update.

I am guessing that, that and it was once possible to buy this laptop with the CPU in question so I can't see why I couldn't

how much thermal compound will it need as it's a lot smaller than a desktop CPU, also I am about to go and do something so it'll be released tonight about 5:15 maybe

as this thing as no heatspreader, you need to apply a very thin layer of the entire die.
