That 'someone' is wrong i5's are much better for gaming, I recommend an i5 7600K or wait for R3 (Ryzen 3) which will have 4 cores and 8 threads.

Absolutely not. 

 

A good pair would be anywhere from the i5 6500-6600k/7500-7600k. You could to an i3 if you don't play CPU intensive titles, but they're certainly not better.

Not objectively "better", of course. But they are dirt cheap and can do fine with most games as long as you have a good enough Graphics card. An i3 can bottlneck your GPU in CPU intensive games, but if you're just playing Overwatch, Dota2, LoL, or any older AAA Games you might be able to do with an i3.

 

But no they are not objectively better. Unless you'd have to sell your kidney to get an i5 (which aren't even that expensive).
